Cost of a new barrel.

Well i think that i smoked my barrel on my savage 12FLV 204.

How much does it cost to get a new one and all put together. I have looked on some of the websites and 300-350 is typicial for a new barrel, what on top of that would it cost??

If the throat is burnt is the whole barrel shot??

Thanks

I just had a new Hart barrel put on my swift. Total cost was $625. Well worth it. On some barrels, if there is room, a gunsmith can cut some of the barrel off and rechamber it. I was told the labor was going to be about the same. I chose to go with the Hart barrel. The barrel alone was around $325. It shoots alot better. Average groups with the factory barrel was about just under 1.00". The worst groups I got with the Hart barrel was around .750" Once I got the load found, I am now shooting groups around .350 with the best at .220"

HL...only a borescope will tell ya the actual condition of the bore...i don't own any savages (yet) but are sav replacement barrels from savageshooters in that 300$-350$ range?....and how many rounds thru ur 204?

HL....disregard the savageshooter in above response....check out "sharpshootersupply.com" or "ershawbarrels.com" or "brownells.com"...just depends on what results you desire...you can always request feedback on any barrel manuf or supplier...maybe savage can do a re-barrel?????

Well i have had it for 5 years. Not sure of the bullet count, but it see's quite a bit of shooting, 6-800 a year, maybe? Mostly a coyote/ varmit/ with some target practice shooting. I did have a post here earlier with the problems.

But long story short. I shot it and it did alot of keyholing, and my buddy could see a smoke trail to the target at 100yds. The loads have been 30, 35 gr berger's with the 35's at max. 32 gr noslers at 28.8gr of h4895. All the upper end of the load data. All shot real good. Then i seemed to miss my varmits more than normal.

Was running out of the 32's so went to sight in the 35's and they key holed. Some guys thought dirty/ copper. So clean real good, same key holes. Cleaned again with good copper solvent and a brass brush. Then shot some 30's. None keyholed, but wasn't accurate. Shot them a little and went back to cleaning, then today shot some 35's again.

First 3 out of a cold clean barrel were 2-3in groups. Then the next four were touching. Then the next 7 were all over, again 3-4in group with a couple that seemed to be partly keyholed. Got mad and quit.

I did check the stock and seemed to be floated. Going to have it checked out to be sure, but one guy i talked to said it sounded like the throat was getting bad.

What would make the smoke trail to the target??? My buddy tried a couple in his and he didn't have any smoke.

It's not a "smoke" trail it is a contrail like a high altitude plane makes. It is due to the humidity in the air at the time. I've seen it from my 22-250 and sometimes with 40gr slugs out of my 223.

It might be a "con-trail" but, it could also be the bullet coming apart due to having the jacket shredded by a very rough or copper fouled bore. From the earlier post, concerning cleaning this barrel, I suspect shredding. I would also stop using a brass, copper or bronze brushes with any copper solvent.

If it turns out to be the barrell.. You can change it out in about 20 minutes by yourself on a savage.. Shoot me a P/M if ya want.. Kerry

Seems like there are a lot of rounds down the tube in your rifle. To attempt to bring it back to life, I would scrub the bore a couple of hundred strokes with a tight fitting patch loaded with JB Bore Paste, If that doesn't get it shooting again, I'd go for a new barrel.
As someone mentioned above about Hart barrels, that's what I'd go with. My most recent Hart barrel installation, by Jim Hart at Hart Rifle Barrels in LaFayette, NY cost $330 for the barrel, and another $300 for the install. Jim Hart is one VERY good gunsmith too, a very savy guy. I've been to their shop and talked with him when I went there to pick up my rifle.
Every Hart barrel I've bought since 1968 has shot as good as any barrel available. One condition is, you must use a good gunsmith. A lousy installation will have a good barrel of any make shoot lousy groups.

Edit to add: Forgot you have a Savage rifle. You can do the install yourself.

i got a barrell from savageshooters i think is the website,a guy has them,i gave 125.00 a few years ago,got the barrell nut wrench, and a go-gage,and made a action wrench.once you break the nut loose its no problem to change the out

Hart Barrels are very good indeed, but don't overlook Pac Nor they are also very good. I had a rifle chambered in 6mm06AI and it took about 8weeks for the turn time so that is also something you might want to consider before you buy a new barrel is turn time. HAPPY HUNTING

Check out the Savage site below. You can get new take off barrels from $175 on up and custom from $250 on up. Its very simple to do your own swap as well, likle changing your socks! My gunsmith did my swap for $35 after I bought my new bbl. online as I didnt have the gages and it was easier for me to have him do it.
$300 for a bbl swap is about $250 to much IMO.

Just do it yourself. Very simple to do. Just make sure you get a "finished" Savage replacement barrel, as not every barrel maker has them. The hardest part is getting the barrel nut off for the first time, as Savage sets them to around 75 pounds. When you tighten the barrel nut back down, 40-45 is all you need. Good luck!

Go to savageshooters.com and look under the vender classifieds. Northland Shooters Supply will have new Savage factory barrels, along with Shilen and McGowan. Sin Arms will have Lothar Walter and Brux barrels

Don't be afraid of changing the barrel yourself. If you can charge your own spark plugs, you can change a barrel. If you end up with a new barrel, I would even be willing to talk you through the change over the phone. It's that simple to do.

Here are the tools that you will need.

That sounds easy enough.

Which one would be the best. Or what is the difference in the three on the page. I would want a blued one.

Not sure what three you're referring to. But, I have rifles with Hart, Shilen, Lilja, and Douglas barrels. All shoot exceptionally well. I bought my first Douglas barrel in 1960, and my first Hart barrel in 1968. Being loyal, I try to buy them. However, my last two builds used Shilen barrels because they are the barrels my gunsmith preferred; so I went with them. One of those rifles will go Deer hunting this fall.
