seen a picture today of a cougar that is in lawrence county, ohio where i live. any of you ohio guys will know that cougars dont live here atleast there not in our hunting regulations.ha. anyway a guy i live with had been running off at the mouth about seeing the thing with a kitten or little one whatever you call their young.i was having a hard time believing him. lawrence county is on the border of w.va. and they have cougars in the upper part of there state so there is a chance it has migrated. but anyway. there have been about 15 sighting of it since january and this past weekend they got a picture of it. last week the guy was checking his fence so he could put his cattle back out and he said that cougar let out the loudest scream he had ever heard. he said he run like the wind and realized if it wanted him it could of got him. he figures he just got alittle close and she was just trying to run him off. theyve had 8 calves lost just this year.i thought it might of been someones pet and it got loose but then there comes the question of how did it get a little one?anyway the wildlife officers said they were looking into trapping it to get rid of it so ill keep you guys posted on if they succeed. just thought some of you ohio guys would like to know you never know what you will see when you walk out your back door.

nightwatchman,
If you want one, you'd better get after it.

Currently there are no laws against shooting a cougar, in Ohio. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

It was rumored that there was a cougar in my area that WAS a pet, but the owners couldn't control it and it escaped. I asked the Game Warden if any laws would be broken if I were to shoot it. He told me that the only thing preventing me from shooting it would be the owner showing up and claiming it. Then there would be charges for personal property damage....IF they could show the legal paper work for ownership. Otherwise, it would be mine to do with as I see fit.

In the end, I elected to not bother shooting the cougar and went hunting for coyotes. If the circumstances were different I would've hunted the cougar. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Good hunting, Bowhunter57

wv has had cougar killed in the upper parts of the state bordering virginia.i believe as many as 8 have been killed. anyway, i have no intentions of killing the thing. i would like to see it and maybe get a pic myself. i sort of figure that it was a pet of someones. there is a local game reserve close by that is enclosed and sells hunts for out of towners. i still find it hard to believe it came across the river but ive seen some weird things out of animals who knows?

Oh yeah! They are there. I saw nice 4 inch wide
prints in the fresh mud while trying my luck at
some coyote calling early this spring, it was deep
in Wayne National Forest.
Made me feel damn glad I had a .25-06 with me.

Shhhhhsssssssssss!!! don't tell anyone WV has cougars or WV DNR will liken it to UFO sightings /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
The truth is out there /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

i contacted the dnr in wv to just question them on it. they said that they havent had any pictures or sightings in several years but that they had had several situations where they had to remove illegally smuggled cougars that had gotten loose from people. that is where im guessing this one came from. they said that they are listed as an indangered animal in wv and illegal to shoot.

I know West Virginia, and Kentucky have a few, but I think some of those are escapees. They caught tiger running loose near my house. A feller up the road has normal color and black leopards along with deer. Pets like these are not rare and every year I hear of escaped animals. I don't doubt that some are wild cougars, but I think some are captive escapes or released.

zach, what part of ohio are you from? there is a hunting preserve close to my house that keeps animals like that thought you might be close.

Had a young hunting friend of mine and his buddy jump a cougar out of the bottom of a creek while 4-wheeling this summer in eastern Darke county. West central Ohio. Think it was an escaped pet.

I'm in northwest montgomery county. I fella over in miami county had cougar, leopards, and some other stuff. There are others in the area that have stuff like this too.

caller man, are you doing any good in cartercounty, i have been going farther north toward, vinton and meigs to do my coyote hunting. the land lays perfect for calling and there are huge open pasture fields to hunt. its just too populated to do any good in lawrence county. ive killed a few but i bet ive made 25 stands for every dog i get.

Last fall in Kansas City, a woman ran over a cougar with her car, which is no small town. About 25 years ago, my aunt, uncle, 4 cousins, myself, and two family friends saw a black cougar in Chariton County, Missouri, while picking mushrooms. The cats are out there, wherever they came from, that is a fact.

We had a foul get attacked here in central Indiana this spring and the attacker was a couger
we have had other sightings as well, no conformation. We had a tagged wolf from wisconsin
come down to west central part of the state.
Our DNR told me there are no regs for cougers because they are not in the state so if see one I could shot it.
