Cover scents

The latest issue of Predator Xtreme has an article on what works, what doesn't work, and why. Bottom line, you can't hide your smell from a coyote. Their olfactory system is one of the most highly developed in the animal kingdom. Do you think the nose of a drug or bomb-sniffing dog is impressive? A coyote's nose is 5 times greater than that!

Try things and come up with your own Ideas there is alot of different mind sets on here and every one is backed by getting out and doing it and makin things happen. some use this, some use that, some don't use anything and some mist, some put clothes in boxes with pine needles and some cook bacon before they go out and some cover them self in the grease LOL

I was trying to read the label on this bottle of cover scent to recommend it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif [image] [/image]

The day I bring her home, I'm gonna need more than cover scent, I'm gonna need a heck of an excuse when the Mrs. sees her!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Tripod,
Finally, some useful information added to this thread! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

What about a fox urine or probably a raccoon urine for me since i have never seen a fox where I hunt /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Tripod-I don't think that's a cover scent, more like a lure. It works on me even over the internet. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I had previously posted on a thread that I had mentioned that cover scents hadn't worked as well as I thought. Since then I have changed my mind. I have done 2 things since that last post and have had several dogs come in right on top of me and 2 have circled all the way around us I thought that they were gone for sure but they did a full circle around us and then came in on our upwind and the way we were setup our most blind side of the stand. I use the Dead Downwind E3 spray apply much more liberally than before an as well have gone and gotten the wildlife technologies Autumn Formulas cover scent put a cap full of Vanilla Extract in it and I use that on the entire boot and up the sides of my pant legs and any other area that may rubb on the bushes around me as I walk. I have heard several times that vanilla covers the human scent and used it as a kid to inspect baby rabbits so the mother wouldn't smell the human scent and kill the babies. Let me tell you after using it for the very first trip I will never coyote hunt again with out this blend on my boots and parts of clothing. The other reason I used the vanilla is it is my opinion that yotes ar every curious and I watched a coyote hunting segment on you tube that mentioned vanilla and watched a few hunts this guy had used it and thought I would try it. It is interesting though that last weekend I called in a pup and it came in down the exact trail we came in on and it stopped and smelled several bushes before I popped him. My thought is that it must have been the Vanilla, I have never seen another coyote do this before now but he was a pup maybe this was the cause? This is long winded but hope it helped you.

What's that spray you mentioned in the beginning of your post? I usually descent myself with the usual shower stuff, and bring both fox and rabbit urine out to stand with me, altho I don't always use it on every stand. The vanilla is a new trick, sounds pretty interesting.

I use goldenrod scent purchased from Kirshers(spelling?) and sometimes rabbit & coyote mixed together. It's mainly a confidence thing with me in coyote hunting. I know they sure work with deer though.

It was the dead downwind E3 stuff that I used before but I did not use it as liberally as I do now. And the key is to use it on every sweet area of the body, crotch, buttocks, arm pits, hair, hat and of course chest and back. This has seemed to help, the last couple of trips have proven to me that this is the way to go. I will tell you that at first I thought it might be the time of year that was the issue, but the first 2 times I went this summer I didn't use the cover up scents and all the dogs circled downwind and were gone. But the past 3 times we have gone and used the stuff I have described we have had dogs dang near run us over and success has gone up considerably.

I use cover scent, you don't have to use it to hunt coyotes. The key word is cover.I would love to read the latest issue of predator x treme. When i go coon hunting and the dogs don't strike and come back in they come right back to us, they know where we are every time.Yotes know where you are to i never had one miss me more than 10'.Who cares right but i use Wild Life Research Center brand red fox urine.I also splash alittle be hind my ears because i noticed the chicks here in Vegas kinda dig it ha ha .C weeks nice post.
