Coydog %

How many "coydogs" or "questionable" coyotes, have you seen? Out of all of the coyotes you've seen, while hunting/trapping/calling, ect. Use either a (number) or a (percent). If ya would, also say what state it was in.
Thanks

cool question /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I've seen 1....... looked like it had mixed with a golden retriever.

I have never seen anything I could call a coydog in 41 years of calling the west, and I've seen alot more coyotes then most folks have. When you call something a coydog, can you prove it? Just because it looks like it or acts like it don't mean it is. I'm sure there is such a thing, but I think wild dogs are more the norm that are seen then real coydogs. Just one guys opinion, Good Hunting.

BillyTheKid,

No offence, but some folks have not seen what others have. I've hunted quiet awhile myself. But have never seen a white or albino coyote. As for proving it, obviously you'd need a DNA sample. Just wondering what others have seen & what state. In Iowa, unwanted dogs are frequently dumped off out in the country. I do believe it is a rarity(coydogs), but none the less does happen. As for wild/feral dog(s) or packs, Iowa has more than it's share.

kirby,
I have called and trapped my share of coyotes, but have never seen one that looked like a cross breed. I have seen photos of animals that do in fact look like dog/coyote hybrid.

Rich,

This is all VERY intersting to me. I've seen a handfull over the yrs, of which looked like X's. A couple looked exactly like a coyote, shape & color wise . But were far to large, to be pure coyote IMO. Well over 50lbs.

Three others were the size of a small/medium size wolf. But were odd colored. All of them, I was able to "zoom" in on pretty close up, with my spotting scope. I still couldn't tell, what exactly they were.

I have a friend that has one for a pet. He won't hunt coyotes anymore as a result. A friend of my brother has had all his chickens wiped out by coydogs. We hunted for them one day but did not call in anything so I have no proof of them.

Have to agree with the inability to "prove" coydogs are just that. Should we kindly ask them for a swab??? I'm sure all of the above are out there....

My work is at the edge of the desert in the Phoenix area. We had a litter of 3 coy-dogs that live on the property for a while. They looked like daddy was a Labrador retriever; the mother seen with the pups looked all coyote. They were of coyote build, had the fluffy tail and yellow eyes, but were black with the white patch on the chest.
They seemed confused when encountering people, like the lab part wanted to come up and be your friend but the coyote side would cause a retreat.
One was found flat on the road, second the grounds maintenance man found dead of unknown causes and third is gone. Mother had a litter the following year of all coyote. We knew it was her by the notch in her ear.

One of the unknown? ones I seen that looked like a coyote. Was circa 1972, I was hunting with my Dad & buddy's at the time. This coyote or whatever, would've pushed 60-70lbs atleast. We dumped our greyhounds on it, but it got away.

Another time, circa 1998 hunting with just my Dad. I spotted one coming down a draw in a wide open valley off the road a couple hundred yrds. It was very large & cream-colored one. I shot at it, but couldn't connect. My Dad thought it looked more like a wolf, than a coyote-x. Never seen it again.

Two winters ago, I spotted a very large "rust" colored one. It was real wooly & scruffy looking. It was hunting in a picked cornfield. I zoomed in on him with my(50 power spotter) from 1/4 mile away. I got a pretty good look at it. It seen me sitting on the road, & took off. I've been looking for him/her ever since. Talked to the farmer who owns this land. He thought it was a wolf. He seen it up real close, while picking corn. It looked like a yote-x to me.

Ive lived in rural southern Arizona my whole life, and have been hunting them for over 30 years. Ive never seen any evidence of a coydog yet, heard the stories, but never laid eyes on one.

I estimated awhile back, I've seen 600 or so coyotes, since 1968. Whatever these things are. They are pretty rare indeed to happen upon. I shot one & knocked him down in winter of 1981/82. He was paired up with a little female coyote. He was all Gold in color & pretty large. He ended up getting away.

Coydogs are more rare in the North compaired to the SE US. Coyotes only come in heat in the winter and in most places dogs just wouldn't make it through a tough winter, like a coyote can. While you'll find the coyotes out in the country and living fine, dogs are going to move into cover close to be able to stand the winters.Or die out!
SE US doesn't have our cold, so you could have more feral dogs breeding female coyotes in the "peak estrous time", down there than in places with cold temps and deep snows.
Also you will have almost zero reproduction as all males will be sterile. The genes don't mix! So the line of a cross continuing on wouldn't be far!
I have seen many red wooly coyotes, but there all 100% coyote no dog, I think because some see a coyote that doesn't fit the coyote "bill" they think of cross, like sqaure heads and shorter ears, but there coyotes just a break down in the genetics/ breeding.

Good info ADCcoyote,

I've read similiar info on this. On another site, from a Biologist prior to joining here. Whether a few of these were mixed with dog. I don't know.

The one I winged (Gold colored)looked just like a "compact" wolf, except for his ears. He crossed the road a few ft in front of my vehicle. I know this sounds weird, but his muzzle was very broad/short & he had very short pointed ears. All of the other "odd" ones had ears that mostly resembled a coyotes, in height & shape. But their head's looked different.

Check out..."Iowa Outdoors" Web-Site. Go to the "Predator/Varmint" Forum. Click on #4 page, then check out the thread. Right near the top of the page, under the title "Coydog or half wolf." Tell me what ya think that dog is? He weighed 68'lbs. Shot in Central Iowa.

In 1970, My Dad & I went to a farmer(Coyote-Houndsman) up by Aldin Iowa. This farmer had a coyote trail-hound for sale. After visiting & looking at his hound. He took us out into his garage. He had a skinned all red coydog? that his daughter shot after his hounds pushed it to the roadway. He said it weighed 75lbs. It was as red as a fox.

The chance that a coyote could cross breed with a dog is really no more far fetched than a wolf cross-breeding with a dog, and we've all seen wolf hybrids. Kirby will appreciate this... one of our local racing greyhound breeders is big in running greyhounds on coyotes. Two years ago, he was using a pack of hounds that he specially bred: 1/2 racing greyhound stock, 1/4 timber wolf, 1/4 great dane. These were some gnarly and nasty looking coyote hounds.

Personally, I've trapped and seen several. Had one for a pet as a kid. I know that they exist, and would expect to see many more here in farm country when you consider the number of feral dogs and loose running farm dogs we have around here anymore. But, coyotes come into their estrus cycle long before domestic dogs seem to and, although the male dom. dog can breed at anytime, the timing just seems to be off for many of them to do the nasty.

Cdog911,

Interesting info. Got any pics of your friends Sight-hounds or your coydog?

Around 6yrs ago. NE of my town. I came across a pure yellow coyote. For a couple of seconds I thought it was a Yellow Lab. We seen each other about the same time, as he just crossed the road in front of me. Looked to be a large male 40lbs or so. He sat down along a creek about 90yrds out. I put the spotter on him, et zoomed in. He was the most beautiful yote I've ever seen(not to mention odd color). Finally he got up & walked away(I didn't have permission to tag him). I've looked for him ever since= nada.

I have caught 6 obvious coydogs. One was very light colored, not white but very light. One had a bulldog type head. I had a coyote give birth to 2 pups in my holding box. One looked like a lab. She killed and ate them 4 days later.

Trapper John,

Thanks for the response. A coyote hunter on another site. Said he seen once, 2-yotes running with a big Yellow Lab.
