Coyote diet question

I read in a magazine somewhere that an area with a high area of jackrabbits is an area with a low number of coyotes.. this is beleivable however how about an area with an overly abundant populatin of mice doesn't the coyotes diet consist mostly of mice?

Thanks
Shawn

Kerrazy,
Coyotes go where the food is. Rabbits and mice are both mighty tasty to a coyote. If I was that feller who wrote the magazine article you mention, I would keep a close eye on that area that held overpopulation of jackrabbit's. The coyotes will soon find that spot. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It seems that populations of both rabbits and yotes run in cycles. Last year I did not find as many yotes as previous years... Now bunny population is way up. Next year I will probable find more yotes and less bunny..

Ill bet you read that in Predator Xtreme.

They only thing Xtreme about that mag is there ability to fill it full of ads. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Do a search on here, and see what makes up the diet % of coyotes. I betcha rabbits arent as much in there as you think. Another misconception by the masses.

Ah, the old "what do they eat" debate. Those of you who have sat on a hillside and watched coyotes hunt, have you ever seen them take off like a banshee chasing a jackrabbit? Did they catch it? Probably not. Mostly they eat rodents. Rabbits are lagomorphs. Of course, one never passes up the opportunity to catch a stupid rabbit now and then, thus their desire to come a running when we blow our calls. I've seen areas where the coyote population is extremely high as was the rabbit population. A more realistic correlation between predator and prey is the Lynx and snowshoe hare. It's classic and taught in biology 101.
