Coyote Dog

This post is about dogs that are used as bait(sortof) for coyotes not coyote running hounds which would be cool but I can't afford. What kind of training goes in to one of these dogs? I am getting a beagle soon, next week actually. Are these good dogs for this? I want to get a coyote bad and so far no luck so I am lookin for anything to improve my odds.

I just read an acritcle on that in a recent Outdoor life. Theres a coyote on teh cover. December maybe. I'd not let the beagle be chased by coyotes, they arent as fast, the article reccomended bigger dogs or fast dogs. Hope you can maybe find that article i think it was November-January not sure which one

I've got a coonhound that would be better for the job but I'm not so sure she would come back after chasing the coyotes out of sight. The reason for asking this is that I am going to train this beagle real well, every other dog I have had has'nt been trained very well. Since I plan on using this dog for rabbits I hope it will train good. I don't really know what goes into doing this but I am going to try it anyway.

deerhunter34,

Do a search on tolling and decoy dogs.

The use of dogs is varied, from a bruiser of an airedale that hunts up non-perfect shot coyotes. To a beagle that just hangs around you when you call and helps watch for incoming predators.

Also look up gunshy dog in your search, there is some info that will help you in training the dog.
Best of luck with your hunting dog, make sure you spend ALL the time you can with it when you get the dog....ME

you my think i'm nuts but i run coyotes with beagle hound crosses. a freind of mine runs them with hare bread (big) beagles. but i think the best dogs for coyotes (at least here in the east) are big slow hounds. the coyote is never very far ahead of a slow dog and tend to circle tighter than when being pushed by faster hounds. as far as training one as a decoy for calling i know nothing. but i do know if you try to use a beagle that your going to run rabbits with too if he is any kind of rabbit dog at all he's not going to worry much about your coyote calling. he's gonna go find a rabbit to run thus ruining your setup. just one mans opinion.

Nothing works better than a wiener dog.

I've got a couple of posts on here somewhere. Do a search for Wiener and you should find it. If I remember, I have a pic up here too with one of my wieners and a pair of coyotes that had intended to eat it.

Chopper, what are those dogs crossed with? Do you think a purebred beagle could do it, I could even put my coonhound on the trail with it. By the way nice site R Buker.
