Coyote hunters

As of late I have seen more guys hunting coyotes than ever before. Most of them are spot/stalk hunters. I use to see anywhere from around 40ish up into the lower 80's, coyotes per season. This past Winter I seen a total of 4.

I hunt most every day from Fall up into Spring. I have for decades. I do know of 1 trapper who hammers them every year in two counties. There is a small town about 25 miles to my south west. Where there is a group who devastates the area population. Year after year.

Winter of 04 (if I recall correctly), was the last time I seen a wolf.

You might have county/government trappers in the area using "coyote getters" (cyanide bait stakes that when chewed pop the poison into their mouth). I can't imagine that hunter's alone could knock off that many. You may have had an epizootic of distemper or parvovirus clean them out.

Probably a combination of issues. With low prices and low population densities you can bet a rebound will happen if food sources are still available.

Based on your comments, it sounds like you hunt 100+ days a year. You are pretty dedicated to hunt that many days/nights and only see 4 coyotes. Maybe I am misunderstanding, but if so, kudos to you. I love coyote hunting but that would be hard for me to put in that much effort without seeing more coyotes.

They just don't seem to sleep as soundly as a Fox. The combination of the shear time it takes to pull off a successful stalk as well as the conditions have to be favorable, limits the possibilities at putting up big numbers. In general, I can kill more coyotes in 1 day/night with calling than I could in weeks of spot/stalk hunting. Don't get me wrong, it can be a fun and rewarding way to kill coyotes, but I just don't see it yielding really high numbers. In my opinion, I don't see it being a major reason you are seeing less coyotes, but you never know. Man has tried about everything possible to lower coyote numbers. Nature typically is a lot more effective than man.

I have refined my stalking skills to the point. I doubt I could ever do any better. Regardless I have not tried for a coyote in many yrs. Let alone a fox. My only interest is just observing them in their natural state & taking pictures.

Last Winter I ran across a group of spot/stalkers. Who had 1 young hunter closing the gap on a bedded coyote. He got real close & killed
it.

As for the area coyote population. The past hand full of years. Their numbers have declined.

But,,, your title says coyote hunters! I think thats the name of the game whether your hunting or taking pics! Just more people in the area is enough to lower your percentage.

Coyotes are not idiots they learn fast that traveling roadside during the daytime means bullets zinging past their heads. In my neck of the woods the fur value in the last few years had everyone and their dog packing a rifle in the truck for coyotes. One old timer kept complaining about coyotes being shot out because he hadn't killed one from the road in months. Meanwhile calling was just as productive as ever.
