Coyote Hunting From An ATV?

Do you think hunting from an atv is effective? or do I have a better chance of bumping coyotes than shooting them?

New to the cyote hunting world, I have a lot of property to cover and could do so better with an ATV. I could do a diffrent 5 mile loop every night.

i use mine all the time when coyote hunting. Here in the appalachians, walking a 1/2 mile to a mile to a stand isnt very common, or physically possible for the average hunter. These are mountains, not level ground or open land. Which there are areas where backing off this distance is possible. My point is, Don't overuse the atv. Try to walk a good distance to your stand. Get away from the four wheeler when you go to a stand.

I use mine a lot to cover as much ground as possible and I also hunt in the hills and cover much more ground this way. It's been my experience to walk at least a couple of hundred yards from the atv before calling.

I so wanted to use mine and tried it quite a few times but after looking closely at my results I can see where it's best for me to walk. In the late summer it didn't matter but mid winter on my numbers went down, started walking and numbers went up a little.

You mentioned at night though and if you want to hunt off it at night I don't think it would hurt, they know they have the advantage at night and respond better than during the day.

Interesting answers. It all comes down to what works best for you I believe. I don't do much walking at all, most times I don't do any. I don't think an ATV would not be much of an advantage for me because of the areas I hunt and the way I hunt. As far as night hunting goes, I believe the hunter has the advantage not the animal, but that's just my opinion. The only one that knows that for sure is the predator we are hunting lol....Good Hunting

I do hunt "USING", not hunting off of, an ATV. One thing that has really made a huge difference for me is the use of an ATV Silencer. I purchased one from Benz ATV Silencers that I found on the Web, and it is unbelieveable how much it dampens the ATV noise. As an example, a friend of mine, who has excellent hearing, walked up my driveway while I had the ATV engine running and could not hear it until he was within 30 feet of the Honda! He was shocked as to how quiet it ran.

Now I realize that while moving the noise will increase, but I honestly believe that I can get much closer to my stand before I have to shut down the engine. (As a general rule, I walk at least 300 yards before I set up, but before I would not consider setting up before 4-500 yards.)

It works for me!

When it's warm enough, I use one extensively in the plains, farmground area where I hunt. State law allows you to ride them on dirt roads, so I have permission from several property owners to park my truck in their yards, offload the quad, and cover 25-30 square miles around me. Saves gas and scratches on my truck. Much of my area is flat making it very difficult to hide the truck from pickup-shy coyotes, but pulling the ATV into a hedgerow or parking it alongside a brushpile or just down over the lip of a washout puts it out of sight. The coyotes don't seem to kind it much either, even if it is visible. The first time I used mine, I parked it alongside a creek and walked in about two hundred yards. After I'd been calling a while, I turned to see how effective my camo job was in hiding the quad, and there was a coyote standing beside but right behind it, using it for cover as it looked my way.

i use a dirt bike but i never hunt with in a mile of my bike as i find that i have never, never, never caller one in close to ware i parked my bike. i feel it makes to much noise and the smell of gas makes a diference. also i try not to call within ten minuts of shutting off the engin, not a problem if you walk a mile or so. even driving in my truck i have not had two much sucess close to the vehicle. i like the bike though hell of alot esier to hide in this open country out here.

In Maine you can't have a firearm on an ATV. I've been told you can't carry a hand gun even with a liscense to carry. I never checked into it cause I don't own an ATV.
