Coyote Hunting in the Ozarks

Anyone have any tips or are there any good resources for setups and calling techniques for hunting coyotes in the Ozark hills? The coyote numbers in southern Missouri seem to be increasing but we haven't had much luck calling them. We're the only ones calling around here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Missouri can be tough for some reason. I call southern Missouri quite a bit and have some land around Boliver as well. Dont seem to be the numbers as other states but there are a few around. Prolly more pressure than you realize too. There are very few places where there aint someone calling.

Get in the open fields and try to call em out. Same sounds and techniques as any other state. They are still coyotes, just not as many is my guess as why its harder to call them.

I call all over Missouri and its is hard. Lots of calling pressure. Be ready when you do call one in to harvest it. Lots of folks here call and say they see nothing, most of the time the coyote has busted them and they don't even know it. So easy with the cover to sneak in and then right back out.

I have 2 buddies that live near Bolivar and they hunt that area hard. I also know they have buddies that hunt that area hard also.

I also hunt around Table Rock with a few guys. You have to be ready there as you have about 3 seconds to get a shot off when one comes in before he is gone. They don't stick around long and they are on you before you know it.

I have called in the Ozark Forests a lot and camped over night and hear them all over the place in all directions. They are there, they are just educated more then you think.

My advise is forget the open fields and your rifle. Get in the woods and thickets with a shotgun. Start out calling softly then louder as you go. Sit still.
Prime example;
Those guys that hunt Arkansas with the mouth calls on you tube. Never see them in an open field.

I live in Southern IL and havent taken my rifle hunting in 3 years. I have great success hunting in the woods and all my buddies are constantly crying they cant call em in while hunting the fields and they wonder how Im killin them. Last winter I hunted with a friend, as a guest, on a field edge with no luck. We both know they are there. Next day I set up, by my self, 60 yards from the field edge from where we were the day before, inside a dense woods, and scored a triple. Went back to the same spot that evening and the a single.

Give it a try

I'll be in Shell Knob, MO for a week mid-October primarily for fishing but would love to find some nearby coyote hunting potential.
