I got they same yote on trail camera 3 times all by its self. I believe it to be a male on account of it was last week and I couldnt see any visiible wear on the hair. This weekend we shot what turned out to be a female also all by herself. She had been bred though. Should they be paired up or do they not stay together all the time? Like ones hunting while the other rests or do do their duty and seeya?
Also is this the wear of the hair from breeding? This is the first time I have ever seen it.

mi yotes,

I'll kick start your post/questions for ya.

Most of my experience of coyote is from late fall until around the early part of March. Then I'm generally done harassing them.

Just recently, have I see pictures of a pelt like yours. Also I will add. This "Rubbed" word. Never heard it before.

Most coyotes in my area, if their gonna get paired-up. Do so by the end of January. "Some" just don't pair up. So sometimes, I'll see a single nomad, rather than a pr.

I've killed males & females into early March. I have "Never" seen fur like the one in your pic.

Some say, this [fur loss, across the back] is from mating rituals. Personally, I can't buy that...from what I've seen over the yrs. Atleast in my hunt area. Which...if this is true in all locations. I find it pretty odd, to say the least.

As for pr's splitting up? I have seen alittle of this. But generally, they will hang pretty close togther[within the same mile section] as the farthest apart. Once their paired-up. Other's have probably seen/experienced different, than I.

This word [rubbed]. Looks like,[Spring-time shedding to me], not from mating prompt's.

Perhaps, I could stand some enlightening /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hard to tell from the pic., but that almost looks like mange more than rubbing. As far as the pairs goes, they usually seem to stick together for a while and then split when the whelping begins!

She probably done all that rubbin from cleanin dens. More than likely she has 3 or so dens and from all the goin in and out of them workin on them has rubbed her shoulder area thin.

Usually they work together to raise a litter of pups. Most likely the male was close by.

i was under the impression that coyote's were paired for life unless one lost status, was killed or got too old/died. just like wolves in a family group there are alpha's beta's and so on. any offspring not sired by the alpha male is killed. usually by starvation. when you get a warm spell as we've had here in MI, they rub their winter fur because it just gets uncomfortable for them. it's been in the 40's during the day for most of january, february and march. the male coyote helps out in all aspects of pup rearing. they don't just leave the seed and split the scene like many others in the animal kingdom. the rubbed/matted/lost fur could be due to what Canine says as well. it makes sense to me!
