Coyote prices

Earlier on, the market looked similar to last year on the high end for light colored, northern heavy coyotes. Then about 3 weeks ago, the report was 25% off the price of the best coyotes with the poorer quality stuff hardly worth anything.

I just was at my fur buyer's yesterday and he has stopped buying carcass coyotes except for the really nice ones and then he is only paying about 25% of last year's price currently. According to the text I saw, pretty much the biggest buyer of coyote fur across the US says the market (especially overseas) is very slow right now and told my fur buyer he may take the year off. Again, I am not a fur buyer and only relaying what I saw in texts from my local buyer. I hope it changes. For now, I am having all my fur put up, and will decide towards the end of the season if I will sell, keep, etc. If the market isn't good in MT, ND, etc it will probably really be very bad in other states where the fur typically isn't as nice.

The price has been pretty good for the last 5+ years, so hopefully this changes and it isn't back to where there is almost no market for coyote fur.

I'll admit that it was nice to get a fur check worth cashing. Now it won't even cover gas unless you get a 6 pack of them every hunt lol.

The combo of low prices and high gas will keep a lot of guys on the couch, maybe even me lol. I'll keep going to thin a few out for the ranchers and to keep "my" properties. I also have my fur put up, but not sure if it will pay out or not. Might just leave them lay unless they're really nice.

I'm trapping them no matter what the price or expense. I'm trying different things and just not pushing myself as hard as usual. Still trapping with low fur prices gives me the edge over others that are sitting at home not trapping.

The majority of us (at least who frequent PM) hunt and trap coyotes because we love it. The check is a bonus. As 204 said, it may keep some at home and that is OK. I will hunt them whether I can sell them or not. Most people don't get paid to golf, fish, etc.

I heard about a carcass coyote sold a few days ago from Montana going for $35. Sounds like $10-15 for semi heavy stuff if you can find a buyer.

The route buyer I sold to last year told me he isn't planning any routes coming through Kansas this year due to low prices/demand. There is still one other buyer that has signs posted for dates and times for his route. Hopefully it holds together at least a little bit to help with a little gas money.

A few Thursday nights (Nov 18) ago my partner and I shot 5 Coyotes, 1 had mange and the others looked pretty good as far as furred up. Drove by a ranch hand and he asked how we did, told him 5 and 1 had mange.

He told us Petska fur was coming through town and would be at the Sinclair at the 10:15am.

We were 15 minutes from there and my two chest freezers are already full of Coyotes in Colorado.

The Petska guy warned us about the prices being down then he continued to check out a Coyote a guy brought up.

The guy got a check for $8.00

He then graded our 4 Coyotes, he threw one the ground and said - that’s your best dog! He then graded the remaining 3 and said I will give you $10 for your best dog and $1.00 each of the other 3.

We passed on the deal.
