Coyote scrapes and scent posts?
The last few trips out we have been finding more and more “scrapes” made by coyotes. The coyotes pee on the ground and then scrape away the leaves and twigs with their back feet leaving bare ground, we often see domestic dogs do this. Sometimes the debris is scattered over several feet in one direction and there is usually a heavy coyote urine odor. These elongated nearly barren strips are about 2-3 feet long and maybe 6-12 inches wide, mainly found on trails or old woods roads. Marking as he goes, most are going in the same direction where the coyote travels the trail. In years past, I have seen these signs before mostly in the late fall or winter months. I know they do this to scent mark. When we find these calling cards I often wonder if it’s done by the alpha male to mark his group’s boundary area or is this the work of a rogue letting everyone know there is a new guy in the area.
Anyone have an idea?
