Coyote Season?

I am a land owner in Oklahoma. I have never tried calling coyotes. The extent of my hunting them are from the feed truck on a cold morning while I am feeding cattle. We use a siren to call cattle, so that and the cattle moving across the pasture usually cause coyotes to show their face. I am usually hanging my .243 out the window shooting at them in a dead run going straight away.

Just recently, with all the yelping activity around the house I decided to try to call some up. I must admit it will be a little awkward to shoot a coyote coming at me rather than racing away. I purchased some Stoney Point shooting sticks to steady my rifle on. I really wanted to go to the salvage yard and get an old mirror off of a Dodge 1-ton to use as a support, since that is what I have been used to. I also have read a lot of the forum trying to determine what .243 load to purchase. I ended up with a V-Shok 85 grain.

You know it is funny, with plenty of land to hunt on right out my back door, I have just not been that big of a hunter. I lease my land for hunting and usually go hunting once or twice a year with one of my leasees when they come up.

Reading all these Posts in this Forum has got me fired up! I am ready to call something up. I am ready to kill something and brag it over the forum with a gory picture!

A question I have is certainly the load for my .243 that I have chosen. Also, Oklahoma has a year round Coyote season. What is the best time of the year to hunt? (I know you diehards will say any) But seriously, I am wanting to know when is the most prolific time to go?

The weather turned off cooler today, so maybe this evening would be a good time to bust out.

Thanks!!

Rooster, welcome !
I think the general opinion is that right around now is a good time to start, when to stop on the other hand ,well opinions vary I would imagine that your killing coyotes not olny because its a chalenge and a test of skill (and FUN) but because they are a problem (with livestock and all) so denning season may not be an issue with you , for some guys it is.
As for what round for your rifle , do you plan on keeping hides? If thats not a concideration I would guess that anything that shoots well in your rifle would be fine. Im pretty sure that any round the .243 shoots will kill coyotes reliably.
Have fun!

Rooster , if you would like I would be more than willing to come up and help you with your calling , I will call um and you can shoot um . You should look at joining some of us in January we are going to get together for some winter calling shoot me a email and we will see what we can do.

Well, I hit it tonight for the first time ever. Called from two different spots and no action what so ever. I know that I have a good area, because no one hunts it and I hear them a lot. I also have a Jack Russell that gives em hell off of my back porch at night.

I was using a Lohman caller that a buddy loaned me. It sure didn't seem very loud. I tried to call for a little bit then turn it off and back on again. I stayed out in each place for about 20-30 minutes. Didn't see a thing.

My visability is somewhat limited due to brush. It is not like those beautiful rolling hills that I see in Randy's Truth in Calling Videos.

What a let down. I was all studied up and then nothing.

Caller-4-Hire,

I would love to get together some time. I need some help getting set up out in the field. It all looks good in theory, but the real-life hunting is hard.

The group hunt that people have. How do those work?
