Coyote Summers in AZ

Easy question for you Arizona hunters.

"Do you stop calling coyotes in the summer?"

I've never tried to call in the summer (mainly because I was in the Navy and was never home) but this summer I'm gonna give it a shot. I've had relatively good luck this winter.

If you do hunt the summers how does it change the way you hunt? Do you call differently? Set up differently? Duration of your stands?

Thanks in advance!

The peak time to hunt coyotes in the summer will be before the monsoon season starts. Generally, that will be from May to mid-July. Hunting coyotes when it is hot and dry will be very productive within 1 mile of reliable water sources. May and June is when most wildlife are nursing their young and lactating females will need to be close to water. Taking coyotes while they are denning and nursing their young is the most effective way to control their numbers and to minimize coyote predation on other species such as deer and antelope fawns.

The online AGFD Recreational Access Map will show the location of all the wildlife waters around the state. You can check where wildlife waters are located in your area and then focus hunting coyotes at these locations especially in May and June. The AGFD will haul water to these catchments if they get low so report low water levels and maintenance problems if you notice them.

Hunting the first couple hours in the morning is usually the best and then hunting usually slows down as it warms up. Apply the same techniques for calling as you normally would.

When the monsoon season starts, the wildlife will disperse and hunting will be less productive around water sources.

The coyote population in AZ is very prolific. About 40,000 to 50,000 coyotes are taken each year by sport hunting (current 10 year average) . There are several more coyotes taken each year, in addition to sport hunting, by trapping, depredation (aerial gunning), and vehicle collisions.

Good luck and good hunting!

No, I prefer hunting when it is really hot and I don't have to worry about atv's or hikers ruining my stands.

I am a 54 year old natve Arizona desert rat. I get no pleasure sitting on a stand when sweat is pouring out of me. I have paticipated in a predator calling "boot camp" in August put on by Youth Outdoors Unlimited. The camp is held up in the pines on top of the rim. As a mentor I take other peoples kids out calling. That's the ONLY calling I'll do in the summer. You guys that like to sweat, have at it!!

These are fairly encouraging replies. I'm glad to hear that I don't have to stop calling when the heat settles in. Also, if I could get more info on how to become a mentor that sounds like a constructive way to spend some days off.

Thanks,

Ron

you can call all you want.. Have fun..

You will either do it, or you will stop and take a break..

I personally hunt for fun, once a year for elk for food. There are to many lakes with trout and Crawdad's to mess with coyotes.

I take a rifle and call with me in the truck for the occasional quick stand. (when i see one)

But for the most part, i use the summer time for load development, shooting training, and fishing.

I love going up camping in the mountains where it's in the 50's at night and mid 80s in the day. I take the rifles, and metal plate and set up under the tree's in my chair and move around shooting at the metal plate.
I did that this weekend actually and was practicing hitting the 10" and 3" at different distances.

I stop calling when the snakes, bugs, and ants don't leave you alone on stand.

I'm with AZ mike, I hunt your neck of the woods a lot...but the freakin heat? I leave Vegas and head to Utah to escape the heat. I tend not to hunt during the summer months mainly to let those pups grow and re-populate. So when September comes around...we tend to get quite a few "non educated" yotes...but that said...nothin stopping you, so go for it! That's just my $ .02

I have dropped plenty of coyotes in 110 degrees and dripping sweat. But I do it for fun and the heat never bothered me... never bothers the coyotes either until they get hit with a 53gr VMAX.

AzRon, consider the north country for some fun calling. In the areas around Williams can produce well. Around Lake Mary and Mormon lake south of Flag. It is especially fun for us desert guys to call a few deep in the forest. They really tear up the antelope young S/E of Flag on the prairies. Gather up a few buddies, take a few days camping in the areas and surprise yourself with how good the populations are in the deep, cooler forests.

I have called in summer or late summer and always seem to have better luck not sure why. wish I would have that kind of luck on the competition hunts I do lol. I have only done 3 to 4 stands early in the morning and get some to come in on at least one stand and it gets hot here too I'm in kingman area.
