coyote vocals during the day?

While out calling this morning I got to thinking bout some things. One being using coyote vocals on stands durning the day. By vocals I'm mainly talking bout howling. What I got to thinkin bout was if using them helps, hurts, or doesnt impact your odds when trying to call in the ole song dogs during the day. I ask this because the more I got to thinkin bout how often do you really hear coyotes howling during the day? Seems more like you only hear them in the "golden hours" the 2-3 hours after sunrise and 2-3 hours before sunset and durning the night. Given on my morning hunts most the time I'm usually callin it a morning round 10 o'clock. I was just curious bout them guys them make a full day of callin do you still use howls during the day or stick to distress calls?

Thanks,
Luke

I have howled coyotes in on several occasions in mid day. They don't always howl back they just come to meet the other coyote and eat a v max.

I have called in a few useing vocals thruout the day but in my oppinion its more productive in the first and last hours of daylight .Just my experiance.

I like that !!!

I throw out lone howls and then let the response dictate what comes next. Sometimes they will come in without howling back. If they howl back I try to match the sound thier making which is usually a challenge howl. Most of the time they just show up for the VMax diet plan.

Howling gives them a wake up call. I think it gets there attention. Seems that you can get multiple coyotes coming into howl than to rabbit distress and more targets is always better!

I have tried howling a lot here in Utah and I have very poor responses. I only think I have howled in a half a dozen in 20 years. I always blamed this on the fact that Utah is pounded, but I really think it is because I don't do it right. I think I over call. How many howls do you do? How long do you wait between howls?

Interrogation vs invitation?

I wish it worked for me, anyone else from Utah having consistent successes using howling?

Salem Songdawger :

in my oppinion when it comes to howling LESS IS MORE.
keep it simple and be patient .
Do any of us really know how to do it right? some may think they do , but only the coyotes know for sure .
After years of stands and years of howled in, challenged in ETC. coyotes Im still not sure why they respond to a certain vocalization when they do , Anyone who tries to tell you they DO know why is ------ well a little self absorbed in my mind. I have never thought enough of myself to be able to say i have mastered much less really even understand the coyote language . .Some times they come and some times they dont ,But most come in silent i do know that much LOL, jerry .

I want to expand a little if you guys are willing...I've got a Primos howler that I use for sparking up spring turkeys...Right now all I use for predators is distress sounds....Could you guys in the know toss out a couple scenarios of how to use coyote sounds early and late or whenever...What sort of sound to you make and what's your approach as far as set up and calling sequence....I'd like to give it a try, but I need a starting point and I'll bet there are other guys here in the same boat....

So far the only Coyote vocals in My area that have worked has been Hurt Pup "Foxpro" and that has been 2 times. Female Coy Barks and Howls "foxpro" 3 times but only in the mating season. Once with a J Stewart Single Locator Howl followed By Rabbit distress brought one in. I have better luck with distress calls. Interesting thread to see what works for others.
