Coyotes and cows

Just came in from checking cows calving and on the way to house I could here in distance howling and yelping and it came close to the buldings, I have timber east of calving area, sound like several coyotes. I lost 2 calves born at night last year and were laying along fence where I saw them last and next morning all was left was hide and leg bones about 50 yards from where I'd seen them last, drug to old iron pile. I did see a pair of yotes distract a cow and the other circled around and tried to grab calf, but I ran them off.
I bought a fox pro, but haven't had much luck calling and have little time in daytime. I want to try my luck at night. What do some of you use for calls at night?
I have open fields that I farm, and I calve in a 135 acre field that has timber on two sides. I have over 2 sections of rough timber I can call in. I can call in farm fields around timber. Any help will be appriciated

You can use the same sounds at night that you do during the day. If you have any Coyote vocalizations on that FoxPro of yours, I might try and use some of those in the cattle populated areas. Pack howl or an interrogation howl would work pretty good. It would give the real dogs the impression that an intruder(s) has invaded their food territory and they would more than likely come to investigate. Too bad you don't have a "Distressed Calf" sound on that caller!!

One word of advice, if you have a remote unit, I would not set the caller up away from you. When the dogs come in, they will not be looking in your direction and instead will be looking at the caller. Thier eyes will not shine for you as you are scanning with the red light.

Swift, I was thinking the same thing, the calf cow would work im sure. The fawn in distress may be close enough to bring them in though.

After posting, I checked the law and I am unable to use a nite lite to hunt coyotes. Back to calling in daytime if I have the time. jrj
