Coyotes and Fleas

Got a question, anyone treat their coyotes for fleas before taking them home? My idea is to stick them in a garbage bag, spray a little Raid in there, wait 10-15 minutes and then load them in the truck. A friend of mine claims he got fleas from a coyote one time. Just curious. I live in MT, but it hasn't been that cold this year, and I don't want my Brittany to end up with a flea problem. Any other ways to treat fleas or is this something not to be too concerned about?

I'm originally from MT and that is what I do. In fact I will be up there in about a week for my annual x-mas hunt. Hope you get some snow and a little cold weather.

Z,

You and me both. By now all the carrion is gone. I've tried calling lions, bobcats the last few weeks, no luck and the season is closed for both in this are. The weather has been warm with very little snow, and they aren't having to feed too much yet. Hopefully the weather will turn cold with a little more snow, with breeding season on, it'll be pretty decent. Gotta find a few more places to hunt though only have 1 decent one mile square grass are. These mountain dogs are pretty tough, haven't had any luck calling them either, too many wolves.

insanelupus-- Fleas are no fun!!! I think they could be quite a problem for your dog, but most human beings are too clean for fleas to stay on you very long. They sure make you squirm for a while though. I get a good chuckle out of some of the photos you see in hunting magazines and even on some recent predator calling videos where the mighty hunter carries the coyote back with it slung over his shoulder. I'll bet those hunters have a few fleas crawling around on them. I only had to do that once and learned my lesson right then and there. Keep the coyote as far away as possible.

My wife comes totally unglued if she even thinks a flea might jump off a coyote onto her!! Gotta keep her happy so I usually take Raid Flying Insect spray with on my coyote hunts. When I bring them back to the pickup, I spray the underside, their arm pits (or is it leg pits?), around the head and in the anus area pretty good. When it is cold, you have to keep putting the spray can inside your clothing to warm it up so it works.

Although you will probably get a better job of coverage by putting them in a plastic bag and spraying the insecticide in there, I don't like the bloody mess that can result from the wound bleeding and getting all over the fur of the coyote. When I get them back into my garage and hang them up, I usually take out the spray can again and give them another good spraying. You'll find lots of those little critters lying dead on the floor the next morning. They will even hatch after being on a frozen body for a while if the weather warms up, so keep them sprayed.

Here's the way I haul my coyotes around in the back of the pickup to keep them from getting soaked in blood.

Here's the way I hang them in the garage.

Seems like 90 % of a coyotes fleas comes from his crotch area, If you would just spray his crotch real good with some raid bug killer, The flea's really don't start crawling out from deep in the fur till the body of the coyote cools, at this point if you have sprayed the outer fur they will contact the Raid and die.
Putting them in a plastic sack isn't good for the fur. I'm not sure what it dose but I think it makes it fall out???

hello guys, i put one in a garbage sack about 1 1/2 months ago. got him in the evening . forgot the raid, anyway i got home & could'nt tend to him. it was below freezing that night & about 40 the next day.that afternoon the fleas were getting out of the garbage sack, i had the end tied off real good, the coyotes toe nail made a small hole in the bag. fleas everywhere !! i wont forget in the future to bring raid. silver & howler are right that coyote didn't look good after spending some time in that sack. i need to find a better way to field skin them, i would like to at home then i have the dilemma of disposing of the carcass. which is the problem i had with this dog. if wrapped up while the garbage take them ?? my luck someone will think i'm a domestic dog serial killer !! my neighbors think i'm odd already !! sreaming sounds & howls echoing from my garage !! didn't mean to put a spin on things just curious.....
good luck...dave

Canadian Coyotes don't have fleas. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

So when Mike Granger comes up here he always brings some with him from Montana. After we've been out for the day my wife makes Mike strip down to his longjohns and then head directly to the shower. She has Head and Shoulders, Flea and Tick shampoo there especially for him. While he is in the shower, she boils his clothes in a vat with a bleach, lye and kerosene mix. I think she's overdoing it, but the therapist says it's good for her to work through her phobias. And really it is entertaining the neighbors. they all look forward to Mike hopping around at -20 in his longjohns.

I think I've got her talked into just having him wear a flea collar. That should be easier on poor Mike.

Oh! and Mike, if you are reading this, no need to thank me buddy. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif That's what friends are for. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Coyote + plastic bag + Raid = no fleas. A plastic tote box works well too. I usually skin mine as quickly as I can and don't really have much of a problem with them.

Tells me what I need to know, thanks all. I wasn't going to keep him in the plastic bag, just put him in it with the raid for about 15 minutes, then proceed as normal. The idea, that most of the fleas would be dead at which point the carcass would be more or less flea free, so I could hang it up or give it to a buddy of mine. I don't skin them, not a real good market, and working 50 hours a week I barely have time to get my hunting in.

Skin the coyote quickly and put the hide in a plactic bag with a good dose of raid. Only problem I have is the raid will freeze in cold weather, so keep it in the truck cab.

Redfrog is right. His wife really gets excited about me bringing fleas into the house. What I can't figure out is why when Redfrog and I skin coyotes together he never gets any fleas? I must really be sweet!!

A cute side note. The other day after coyote hunting a friend dropped by. My wife and I were standing there talking to Ben in the kitchen and all of a sudden a flea is dancing around my forehead. I say "Shelly, grab this flea" and like nothing unusual, she reaches over grabs the flea and kills it. Ben about stroked. He said his wife would die if he ever did anything like that. Just another day in the life of a coyote hunter. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
