i swear coyotes are different here in the northeast, than in the west, tell you why. i went on a hunt in texas creek colorado one yr, and we would drive into town at nite , the yoties were everywhere, sides of the road, crossing the road, you name it,,here in the northeast you wouldnt see that behavor, i am very curious as to why that was.not dumber, just different, we have vast tracks of land here open dairy farm lands and huge forest, its just seems that the yoties here are more secretive on movement and type of terrain they will choose.rarely you ever see em scooting across an open field here.any input to this topic is appreciated,,

You know, I would sau hunting pressure, but thats not the case for me either. Fox here in NC are the same way. I hunted alot in SD, WY, WI, and WA, and noticed the difference. They are more prone to the open in the west, and unlike here, they have alot of forest to hunt through. I called in 2 fox yesterday, and had to shoot one through the brush with buck shot. THey use alot of dogs here too, so this may lead to their behavior. Where do you hunt?

Hey fooge - Eastern coyotes are just built that way. They have been quiet, secreative creatures since I shot my first Eastern over 20 years ago. They just spend very little time in the open. You will see one once in a great while in the open, but its rare.

Check out these links. I'm a firm believer, as well as a few other hardcore Eastern hunters that if you want to shoot yotes' on any consistant basis, you better get in the woods.

You are correct, other than a fleeting glimpse of a coyote mow and then in the open they are rarely seen. I veiw them as a sulking creature of the woods here in the Northeast, and I hunt them much like I would a secretive old buck before rut. Thick woods, treestands mostly.

They can be called into the open once in awhile, mostly in Jan. and Feb when they are willing to take a chance from hunger. But to call in the open in the Northeast will lead to alot of un-needed frustration.

Good news is they will respond to a call just like their Western cousins, they just prefer to respond in the woods.

Hey SD, I have been reading your posts regarding yotes in treestands and thick cover. I hunt in northern/eastern maine and call across mostly open farm fields and frozen rivers and lakes and have some success but have really never tried the thick cover or out of a treestand. I don't own a treestand and have never really hunted from one. We usually hunt deer by tracking where I am from. If you don't mind me asking, what is your response ratio for foxes and coyotes the way you hunt. Mine is probably a response every 4-5 stands but this includes foxes. Just coyotes would be 1 response for every 10 stands. I will be trying some of the thick cover calling this year because I have a calling partner now and we can properly cover the area. We probably won't be using treestands. Great info, keep it coming.
