Coyotes crossing river?

Will coyotes cross a river? Will they cross a river in the winter that isn't frozen? My hunting partner and I were set up next to a river last night and had coyotes howling and barking from lots of different areas but mostly across the river. They seemed to be moving in fast but we didn't hear anything once they got close to the other side of the river. The sides of the river are covered in very thin ice. At one point we heard the sound of an animal falling through ice and splashing in the water. It sounded fairly big and I doubt any deer were around with yotes howling like that. We park our car next to a bridge about a five minute walk down the river from where we set up. So will the coyotes ever swim or cross the bridge to get to food? The bridge is on a frequently used "Highway" although it isn't an interstate. Any tips or info will help.

I hunt along a river. Mostly frozen, but they will cross shallow parts of the river. And they know where that is trust me. But I don't think they will "swim" to food or to fight. But I could be wrong!!

Maybe setup where you can see across it good in case one gets on shore to take a look.

Not unusual to see coyotes swimming in the river here. I've seen them through the summer and fall. In winter we call the river and they run the ice all the time. I'm sure they fall through from time to time.

A few years back my father was out turkey hunting and heard geese making a wracket in the river near by. He went to have a look and two coyotes were swimming after two geese. The geese we just staying out of reach of the coyotes.

HAHA good story empa. Looking back that must have been a coyote falling through the thin ice. We heard them follow us all the way back to our car that night

Its [beeep] rare that's for sure. But: i have heard a couple stories of it happening and i'm not lying to ya my friend! I read a story of a coyote hunter in WI that shot one and while carrying it back to his truck had two yotes run up behind him and he had to shoot them cuz they weren't going to stop!

"brained"

I have had coyotes follow me it does happen, with my experiences its always been after they have "busted" me.

I have walked over a half mile back to my vehicle after being busted with a coyote keeping pace and doing the little "bark'bark'bark',,and whats crazy is they know just how far to stay back using the terrain, wood line, hills and valleys to stay out of sight while doing it.

Many bow hunters have stories of coyotes following them out from their stands in the dark. Vermont has just passed a law that allows bow hunters to carry a sidearm for protection.

My dog and I have been escorted out of the woods by coyotes during the summer, we were in the area of their den.
