Coyotes in Colorado 2018

Hi!

Long time lurker, figured it was time to make an account.

I’ve searched for spots to hunt coyotes in Colorado but most threads are outdated - there has been an increase in hunting pressure the past few years.

I am near the Denver area but willing to travel about four hours in any direction.

This has some urgency as I am hoping to pick up a new hunting weapon very soon and the location will dictate the type of weapon. For example, I might lean toward a bow or shotgun in some areas, but grasslands would demand an accurized rifle.

I’m hoping to get out there this month and all through the winter!
If you want to send a PM (keeping a spot private) feel free!

Thank you all so very much in advance!

In general, there are more coyotes per SQ.M. on the Eastern Plains than in the mountains.

Look for permanent cover, such as sage brush, brushy creek bottoms, etc.

Hunting the mountains, watch the snow line. I have never done well in the forest with deep snow in them.

Hunting the Plains, I avoid the huge winter wheat fields, as the coyote density is pretty low.

I used to have a private duck club all to myself for coyotes for 20 years or so, then the owner sold it to DOW. On 710 acres, I would usually kill 2-3 coyotes each time I went, and I would hunt it twice a month.

Good luck!

Latest issue of Predator Nation recommends the Comanche National Grasslands in southeast Colorado, over 400,000 acres

I wouldn't let the terrain dictate which gun you get. I take a shotgun on every set and kill 80% of my coyotes with it. I hunt wide open spaces as well as woodlands. Multiples are easier with the shotty.

We hunt from the timber to the farmland here in SW colorado, but the pressure has steadily increased over the last few years eerily similar to the elk hunting. As the pressure has increased, the calling percentage has dropped. We used to call in 2-3 each set, but now they bark at you from a distance, so now we hunt the navajo nation in NE new mexico. We still hit a few of the old spots but usually get skunked.

If you ever wanna meet up and do a few stands me and my buddies are here until August. We’ve hunted from up by Craig to La Junta to Sterling. Next trip will probably be out towards Pawnee which isn’t too bad of a drive. We found some decent prairie dog towns out there.

My suggestion for a coyote gun would be a combo. I’ve got a baikal 222/12 but they make em 223/12 and sometimes they pop up on Armslist. Anything inside 200 with my rig will die if I do my part but so far I’ve been able to use my shotgun on the plains. Did miss a 300 yard shot trying for a double but 222 is out of steam out there!

And if you really want a ton of coyotes go across the border into SW Wyoming!
