Coyotes ripping a jack in half

These are just frame grabs from some video I took the other day. Three coyotes, a pair with a pup. I filmed the whole thing, from the coyotes seeing the rabbit, chasing it, killing it, fighting over it, eating it.

Chase is about to end.

Female made the final grab and tried to run off with her catch.

Male snuck in and tried to snatch it.

They each ended up with half.

Rab%20Rip%204_1.2.2.jpg

Then went their separate ways to eat what they had.

Rab%20Rip%205_1.2.3.jpg

They ate it all. Head, ears, feet, all of it.

Pup got it's butt kicked for getting too close and then got to sniff the blood in the snow and that's about it.

Amazing footage Dave. Just incredible to witness something like that.

I wonder if the pup was theirs or a "stray"?

Thanks fellas! I'll eventually get the whole video posted.

My guess is theirs. And a most likely a female. Not too uncommon for a female pup to be allowed to hang around all the way until next years pups are out. It's clear they aren't supporting her anymore though, lol!

Pretty cool Dave. Not something the average Joe gets to see let alone film. Then again we all knew you're not the average Joe.
You bucking for Marty Stauffers job?

Top shelf stuff there, Dave. It's amazing what nature has to offer. It's more amazing that time and again you are able to record and share it with the rest of us.
Was your heart pounding a little while you witnessed this?
Thanks for sharing!

it is just amazing that you got all that on video. if anybody has done this before you, i never heard about it. lol
it's also amazing to me you fly that drone so well and are able to get it done.

well done dave!

Much more experienced and skilled drone pilots than me have assured me I'm most definitely going to crash the heck out of that thing. They're surprised I haven't already. I'm surprised I haven't already, to be honest.

I wonder if that was the plan for the adult pair to rip the rabbit into two pieces? When they are together do they always rip rabbits into two portions?

I would think less fighting between the two of them if they both have half of a rabbit.

Bob, I've witnessed it a few times now. I think it is a very common outcome with two coyotes and one rabbit. And a big part of why coyotes come to rabbit calls.

I don't think it was necessarily a planned deal though. From watching the whole video a few times, I think the female would have kept it all to herself if she could - and she did try. The male was just too quick and strong and got in there despite her trying to keep him out.

The pup on the other hand, couldn't get in there for any despite trying. So I think if it had been just one of the adults and the pup, the pup likely wouldn't have gotten any of it. Unless, the pup caught it to begin with, and held on to it's half for dear life. Which, I'm sure, happens. Even then, it better eat fast!

Mother nature is not always kind. Even we hunters can be reminded of just how cruel it can be in the animal world. At least we, most of us anyway, prefer to be as humane as possible.

Dave, your photo skills over the years continue to impress, and rank right up there with the best. That’s a job well done.
