Coyotes ripping a jack in half

Wow, very nice screen grabs from that footage. I would love to see that footage once you get it posted somewhere. Always amazes me what all a guy can witness if he spends enough time outdoors, has the skills, and puts in the work and effort to be at the right time and place.
 
Oh yes, he had ample reason and ample time to do some screaming between the initial bite and the coup de grace.

On average, how close do/can you get to most coyotes w/the drone before they feel you are invading their comfort zone, Dave? I'm sure they are all different, but just curious if they see the drone as a threat & how they react to the drone.

Most of them want to get away from it as soon after they notice it, which is probably 300 feet? But, most of them pretty quickly seem to decide it's not a danger, just annoying. Some continue to want to get away from the annoyance but not to the point they are going to change their direction for it. Others pretty quickly start to mostly ignore it. To get this footage it got as close as about 15 feet and they were totally ignoring it at that point. There were a lot of ravens flocking around and I think it was just another stupid bird to them. Which I think they are used to on a kill.

There is a pretty wide range of reactions over all though.

Makes sense. I'm sure a lot would depend upon what they were doing at the moment. They were obviously concentrating solely on that rabbit in this case.

Pretty cool stuff.


I was hunting with Venatic in the Texas panhandle one time and killed a coyote that looked like it had swallowed a football. I opened it up and it had a whole rabbit inside. It looked like it had barely torn it in pieces. Almost the whole head and ears were intact. Maybe trying to wolf it down before another one got half of it.
 
^^^ Yup. I watched the female swallow the head of this one whole. The male took more time with his bigger, more choice half. Looked like the other two really weren't anxious to try and move in on him.

Buddy made a bad hit on a coyote once, bad hit, but with a .257 Roberts, so "good enough" anyway. Blew a whole back half of a rabbit with both hind legs attached out of the coyote.

I opened up the stomachs on every coyote I killed one season many years ago too. Saw lots of surprisingly large sections of rabbit! Also saw, that most of those coyotes, were mostly eating mice/voles/small rodents. Lip squeak is deadly for good reason!
