I'm just curious what everyones take on all the nicknames is. I am not a big black board supporter and think everyone is entitled to say what they dang well please, so I am not starting this topic as an argumentive one. I personally think a coyote is a coyote. I have always thought that, long before I was ever around the net or any of these sites. I don't use any of the other terms, and never will. A dog is a dog and is usually a pet. I use the term "dog coyote" to denote the male of a pair. The female is of course the "bitch". But alot of the members here seem to have alot of different names for the same animal. If someone has to ask you what a yodel dog is, what would be your answer? Why it's a coyote of course you would say. So why don't you call it a coyote to begin with? So what are all the terms you guys use, and why? Fire away......

Depends if I hit it or not. If I do, then it's usually "Yeah!". If not, I have a few colorfull explentatives that I my call it. Many that I can not post here.

I usually call them yotes(short for coyote), or dogs , being they are a member of the K-9 family. After all you dont necessarily call each bread of dog by it's specific name. You just usually call them dogs .

OK Crapshoot,
But what if you use dogs to hunt them? How to differentiate? You have to be careful to only shoot the coyote and not shoot the dog.

I’ve been a friend with JH for a couple years now, I know he’s pissed off a lot of people about this and other things /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif , everybody’s got there hang-ups eh? If I judged everybody by what I didn’t like I wouldn’t have any friends at all. Strong or wrong opinions aside, I call ‘em coyotes, always have. All the other cutesy names sound childish, and give me a childish impression of the poster who seems to be trying to sound cool. Dog-Coyote, Bitch-Coyote is proper.

All that said, call em what you like, most of the time I can figure out what your talking about by the end of the paragraph by reading what I think your saying into what I’m reading ie: using ‘dog’ etc.

Well in the case of using dogs to hunt coyotes, I would hope you would know what your Dogs look like and what a coyote dog looks like and know which one to shoot. If you cant tell that then what ever you call them wont help you much.

Coyote is the only proper noun I use in reference.
I use male and female to distinguish between the sexes.
A dog is a domestic pet. That's how I see it.
And like Randy said, if I miss all rules are out the window and the adjectives fly. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I dont much care if you call it a dog, yote, or what ever... But I do care that this touchy subject is brought up. I started calling in 78' and had no mentor scolding me for improper use of the various names that I've used in reference to the coyote and wont start now... I guess I'm reading into this post by some replies . If your a student of higher authority dont bring it to me. What ever I call the dog, yote, coyote should have no bearing on wheather I'm childish, dis-respectful or any other reason to seperate one caller from another. So far it hasn't impared my calling abilities. Sorry, but I will not be guided by someone elses proper grammer. This is not directed at any individual, just a very touchy subject to be brought up on this board... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

crapshoot,
Now of course I can tell the difference by sight, you're missing the point. What if you had someone in the Vegas area call you because they were having depredation problems, and they told you they had some dogs killing livestock. Are you going to kill coyotes or are you going to kill Lassie and Rin Tin Tin??

Cal,
I do see your point, but i think its much like someone using something other than there full name.
I.E., Bud or Cal. I would bet that these are not the names your mom gave you.
what someone uses to reference a coyote is important when talking to someone that may not understand fully what you are talking about(tree Hugger's mostly)
Up here sometimes a dog is the problem. Be it lassie or a coyote. If there messing with the new calf's there a gone.

Bud,
I started this topic for a little debate and info. I was just curious why and what all terms everyone was using. I started caling about the same time you did, and fortunately for me I've had several mentors. J-H is not on that list. But out of all the guys I learned from I never heard anyone call them anything but coyotes so that is what has stuck with me personally. I don't care if someone else calls them little pink elephants and I won't chastise them for it. To each his own, but I will stick with just plain old coyotes. What are your pet names and why? That was all I was wondering.

I all most have to laugh ever time that this comes up. Either here or on other boards. I call them song dogs, yotes and coyote. Most of the time I use coyote. Just because some one calls them some thing other than there proper name doesn't mean that they have no respect for them. Most people have pet -nick names for allot of things in there life. Your wife, kids, friends and pets. And I would bet to say that most of you have respect for them.

For the people that take offence to some of the nick names that people give them I only have one thing to say to them. Get off of your holier than F*&^&*^ now self, come down to earth, And enjoy the short time that we have here and don't sweat the small stuff.

This was not directed at any one person or persons. Just my .02

I have to agree with cougarbait. I personally call them coyotes, but I am really tired of the holier than thou attitude and pontificating done by some.........not directed at anyone in particular, of course. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Some folks need to lighten up a bit and get a more well-rounded life or they will become another unibomber.

Cal, That all depends on what is killing their livestock. If "Lassie and Rin Tin Tin" as you put it is killing the livestock well then yes, I would shoot them too.

The coyote by any other name, 'yote, song dog, yodel dog, etc., is a predator, nothing more, nothing less. Therefore, I treat them just like any other predator. If the season is open on them, they are legal game. According to the law here, if the coyote is doing, or about to do, damage, they are also legal to shoot. I'm sure that I'll catch it on TWO fronts now. I'll put this here for safety purposes: © 2000-2002 Predator Masters, All Rights Reserved. When I'm outside this circle of predator callers of coarse I use the word coyote to get right animal that is in question, and no mistakes on what we are talking about. I would hope that the rest of this fraternity would do the same. (Im sure that we all do) But when I'm inside this circle (predator calling circle this is) dont wrap me on the knuckles for useing DOG,YOTE,or anything else... I wont stand for it. We're all here for the same reason, (Predator Hunting) you know the use of words in the discussions that are going on here. So dont make anyone feel as though they should not use the words Dog, Yote etc... For myself, I generally use dog, yote, puppy, but mostly Coyote /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
