craw fish traps

Anyone make their own craw fish traps? I made a few square ones last year, but it was a lot more work than i think it needed to be. There has to be a better way, lol.

Just dont leave it over night or anything. we have always done this and while we fish we check it every so often and catch a bunch. You can buy traps at cabelas or some place like that also for pretty cheap. we just use the jug when we have nothing else. I promise it works.

Crickets are best caught by hand, but if thats not an option, and you have a spot with lots of crickets, there are a few options that work pretty well. You can just throw down a piece of wood on top of the grass, go back the next morning, and pick up the board and catch the crickets,

Or dig a hole big enough to fit a 1 gallon ice cream tub in, pack the dirt in around it, and lay a piece of wood over it, you should have crickets in the bucket the next day,

Or get some cardboard egg flats, and lay them down and cover with leafs.

I have never used bait, the best bait for crickets is shelter.

Oh yeah, as you know all of these are great places for snakes to hide, especially when there is easy cricket meals for them, so just be real carefull when you go to colect, especially the bucket one!

thanks for the info! i know they will come to some kind of bait! sugar water or the like. never had a problem with snakes in ca. but the blackwidows loved them also. opened many slack boxs and found 100s of crickets in them. kind of spooky reaching in there at night! lol thanks again.

No problem. How long u been in Arkansas for? Copperheads will be your biggest concern. They like to hide in and under stuff on cold nights.

born here. we moved to ca. when iwas a kid and moved back in nov. bought a great place 7 ac. and a small pond with huge fish!! love it! 5 mil. from brother and other fam. know about copperheads and other snakes so i know to be careful . thanks jesse!! ( GO HOGS )

Have caught loads of them in plain ole minnow traps, you may need to open the hole bigger to target the larger craws. Always baited with scrap fish parts/guts, check your regs if thats legal.
