Crossbow ?

I have archery hunted for the last 16 years, but a chronic back problem that I have battled for the last 5 years has become more than I can handle. Drawing a conventional bow aggrivates the condition really bad.

So, I've gotten a crossbow permit.

Any suggestions on brands to check out or stay away from.

I'm looking at the Excalibur Crossbow line and leaning that way.

Thanks in advance for any info.

horton, excalibur, tenpoint.....all nice

i have a horton yukon xl.....pretty basic crossbow, with a Bushnell red dot scope.
works great out to 25 yards.
this year i arrowed a big buck at 15 yards....the arrow entered left to right...dbl lung pass through, penetrated the far side (right) shoulder blade and exited through the bone of the upper portion of the right front leg.
all this from a basic, no frills corssbow.
Im sure you'll do well if you stick with these 3 companies.

I have a draw-lok on my compound and i love it,I only have one good arm so I cant draw a bow without using the foot hold and the one good arm.It shoots just like a normal compound but it is drawn with the foot strap and locks back in a normal release with a saftey,I have the bow set at 78 pounds and it really shoots a tight pattern.I had to go through the local F&G to be liscenced for it,doctor visit ect ect.I would look into this before the crossbow if it is an option in your state because it would allow you to use the bow you have.

I hope it works for you Scout,a good compound with the draw loc is a far superior piece of archery equipment compared to the best crossbows out there,I did plenty of research before i decided on mine.I have taken MD,elk, antelope, yote and turkey with my setup.

In Texas, you have to have an upper limb disability such as an amputation, in order to legally use a crossbow during the achery only season.v Rotator cuff surgery, back problems or other types problems don't count.

Anyone can use a crossbow during the general season.

I live in Missouri....So, I guess that is lucky for me.

I'm not proud to be using a crossbow, but I don't want to give up the sport either.

Popping my back out of place everytime I practice with my compound has gotten to be more than I care to deal with.

Chiroprator visits add up and I don't want to make the situation worse as I age.

Is a crossbow or draw lock an advantage... yes.

you still have to get the animal very close, beat thier nose and etc.

thanks for the input

the real advantage to the draw loc is that you dont have to draw the bow while the animal may see you and you never get tired of holding it back,I lok it back as soon as I get set up or hear elk vocals in the area. Here in MT you have to apply for a modified archery permit,I had to see a doctor of thier choice and he had to sign an affidavid (?),then my application went before a board and they approved my permit,Even with this permit i cant use a crossbow during archery season, they dont allow it for any reason.

Scout22, I don't know how close to Springfield you are, but you might check the Bass Pro Catalog outlet, they have some real good deals on recondition Hortons right now. The Horton Legend XL175 package with the red dot scope, quiver, and practice bolts for $300.00.

All I've ever used is a crossbow. My elbow is junk & I can't pull a compound back. I can't learn to shoot left handed because my right elbow won't take draw pressure either.

There is no shame in using a crossbow. There is in giving up on something you love tho.

Basshole - Thanks for the heads up on the BP outlet, but I think the horton 175 had a recall and I don't want to be involved with a problem child off the start.

Nonya - My concern with the draw lock is I think it would be fairly awkward in a treestand. What do you think?

Not at all,you could hang it out of the way on a hook, just [beeep] it before you hoist it up and dont put an arrow on the rest until you get set in the stand,I use a whisker biscut, its great for this setup because you can carry the bow coked with an arrow in the rest and it CANT fall off the string or the rest,I ordered mine directly from the manufacurer and paid $110 for the setup,I dont use the foot peg they sell with it i attached a piece of high strength cord in a loop to the bow frame so i can slip it over my foot and use it to [beeep] the bow, that way you dont have a big rod sticking out in front of the bow.The saftey on the release is real nice it prevents the arrow from being released accidently,Ill tak a couple pics for you....

When it comes to crossbows, it doesn't get any better than Excalibur.......most Excalibur models can be dry fired with no damage (not recommended), they don't get out of tune and you can replace the string in 2 minutes.......no compound crossbow can make those claims.......

Here is a pic of the footstrap I devised,as you can see I carry the drawloc in my quiver while it isnt being used.

the second pic shows the drawloc assembled,I set mine up so i can just slip the rod in the reciever when im ready to load an arrow,it can be setup so the rod cocks back with the string and sets in place also I just like to carry the rod in the quiver and out of the way for walking/stalking.

you wouldnt believe how accurate this device makes a bow,you have the same anchor point and release every shot.

Nonya,

Thanks alot for all the info.

I have a whisker biscut on my bow now and that was one thing I had been wandering about. I wasn't sure how limited I would be on rests with the draw lock set up.

Thanks again for the pictures and info.

I shoot a Horton Nitro Hunter with Horton carbon matched arrows and broad heads. I found that Horton has real customer service. I also owned a Barnett Quad 300. Both of them had the limbs break, Barnett wanted 80 bucks to fix them Horton had my bow picked up and replaced the limbs for free! I have had several conversations with the Folks at Horton and they are top notch in service and your satisfaction. I also use the Horton Multi-recital scope

Here is a buck I took with my Horton

I would use the lock system, but Utah still does not allow them.
