CROW CALLS

what calls do you guys use for crows and how do you set up for them? i see tons and tons of crows around here and other than the opportunistic shot i get every now and then i dont shoot too many but i think it would be something i would enjoy doing.

If you're using an e-caller try "Sentinel Crow" which is just a single crow calling. It will attract them, but not make them go crazy. If you want to fire them up use "Crow Come Here", but it may attract the whole flock which might be exciting, but you'll only get to shoot at a couple and the flock will spook.

Make a good blind, use camo, maybe a dozen decoys, and set your speaker off to your right or left. Add a couple decoys next to the speaker in a tree.

The above works for us. We try to hunt next to a decent number of birds and plan to spend at least half a day. We don't run and gun because we don't have that many small batches of crows to hunt.

Whatever you use.... get yourself a Mallardtone brand crow call (hand call) They are really, really nice sounding. You can regocnize it by its old school wooden bite toneboard. And worth collecting, sort of.

Get in touch with Micheal Buckner .
http://bucknercustomcalls.com/ He make some awesome calls . I have one of his Desert Iron Woods and I take it with me everytime I go , along with my Gibson and Double Coyote calls.

Setups for crow , well , I use a Ghillie suit and lots of cover . Remember a crow will fly as low as the tallest tree , so try to find some small pines . I like anything smaller than 20'.

If you want to talk about an educated animal , they have a PHD. It is the smartest animal that I have ever hunted and one of the most addictive .

If you want to see what you are missing out on. Go to youtube and look up crow hunting. Better yet .

These are two good videos.

All you really need to do is find an area that holds some birds , go out get hid and play a good crow fight, oh ya have lots of shells. This time of year the birds are really starting to flock up . This makes for great shooting.

www.crowbusters.com check out this website. lot of good info there about techniques and set ups. some great hunting stories on there that'll get you fired up for shooting crows. warning... it is very addictive. i became obsessed with it and have no regrets. biggest problem now is finding new spots to call!!

there are lots of ways to hunt crows and i have experimented with most and each has its advantages depending on time of year, land available, and the disposition of the crows.

some folks hunt the big roosts, setting up in a flyway with a good blind and several decoys, and hunt the same blind for several hours, even all day.

we don't have the flyways here in alabama. or if we do i haven't located them yet. here we either run and gun, or set up a feeding spread on hayfields or grainfields, etc.
shoot til the birds get wise and quit coming in and move to another spot. i use an e-caller and hand calls together. crow fight seems to get the best response here. they will come aggressively to most prey in distress calls. i set the e-caller on a crow fight sequence and blow a rabbit or fawn call. really gets em fired up. i use decoys a good bit. i think they help get the birds into range a little better. but you can have some good shoots without decoys. just throw your dead birds out in the open. they make fine decoys.
www.crowbusters.com check it out. and like TimberToes said, get yourself a MallardTone crow call. i've got a shoebox full of factory crow calls, and several nice custom calls. none sound as good as the old wooden mallard tone. find you and old one that works and pay whatever it costs. it'll be worth it.

Haydell's Triple Tone gives some of the "throatiest" caws I've been able to produce. It is my go-to call.
The trick is to use your diaphragm and almost grunt as you blow to produce a good call. Next, learn the different calls they make so you don't scare them away.
As Nutcracker mentioned, Crowbusters.com is a great site for information.
Good luck.
