Crow hunt Question

I guess it depends on how many spots you have to hunt and how many crows are in your area. I have 5 or 6 spots I usually hunt and since we can only hunt Fri., Sat., and Sun. I try to hunt a spot no more than once a week. If you have a decent size roost in your area you can probably hunt it 2 or 3 times a week.

Crows are smart and will recognize you and your tactics as a threat. It doesn't take much to educate the odd crow you my miss. For that reason leaving an area for a few weeks at a time if you can wouldn't hurt. Some say even longer but we don't all have the luxury of a lot of different sites to choose from.

We have the same regs here in Pennsyltucky.

I always wondered what the logic of that was. (I like Sunday hunting for them).

I honestly believe the crows can read the days on the calendar...they are that wiley..

I think in alot of cases - if one keeps hunting the same plot, those timetables will increase - dramatically.

Does anyone know why you can only hunt crows Thursday thru Sunday in Arkansas?

I heard a reason today but not sure if I needed to throw the BS flag or not??????????

I was curious about the days in Pa, so I emailed my local WCO..

His reply:

Crows are part of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act between the U.S., Canada and Mexico. As such the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, as part of the treaty, only allows each state a certain number of days that each species can be hunted. The same applies to ducks, geese, dove, woodcock, snipe, etc.

Pennsylvania elects to allow crows to be hunted during a longer period of the year but only three days a week (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) while still providing the maximum number of days allowed within the framework of the days and times allowed by the treaty.

Season runs from September through May.

so, I guess each state mixs/matches days & season lengths to come up with the total of allowable hunting days.

it appears they get time off in spring to raise the peeps - so future generations are available to be blasted from the sky like black turds...

Being a Federally regulated bird, there is a maximum number of days the Feds allow crows to be hunted.
To string out the season and maximize hunting opportunities ( weekends and holiday weekends ) the season revolves around the weekends.

That's what I heard yesterday too.
Crow as a protected bird ....... Kinda like coyotes, hunt to control them but protect them while they bear young

That don't bode too well for fall turkey season.

I don't hunt turkeys, but if I come across a SGL parking area and there are vehicles there, I pass out of courtesy to the turkey guys that get up in the wee wee hours and take their struttin stuff quite serious. I figure some of them put alot of time in scouting and I would not want to mess up their hunt.

I can always call the crows from another spot down the road.

One thing about crows, they don't seem to get too active until about an hour after dawn - at least in my experiences.

The Carter Administration, IIRC worked out a deal with the Mexican Gov-ment to stop the unlimited shooting of doves and ducks. They had NO bag limit on migratory birds.
The crow is an important bird to the mexicans, soo, they put bag limits on migratory birds, and we put a season on crows.

Check out crowbusters.com Those guys are hard core crow hunters and know the exact why's of all this.
They know all the tricks of the trade, whe it comes to serious crow hunting.
