thinking about getting one or two for coons.has anybody had any success with them? i heard they are silent on the trail is this true? and what is type has a good sucess rate? im thinking mountain or blackmouth. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

The only "cur" I hunted was a black mouth cur and she ran silent until she caught the coon and by the time i would get to her the coon would be dead.

on a positive note i never had to skin the coon because she took care of that too./ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

she was too hard on pelt's so i gave her to a friend and he use's her on a trap line. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

talk to some of the hound hunters here i'm sure they can help you out.

I have run Mnt, Blackmouth, Kemmer, Catahoulla, and Leopard.
All were silent on track ,and lots of grit.I mostly use them to decoy yotes, but they all learn to scent trail, and blood trail.I have been pleased with all of them, some more than others, but liked them all. I have four right now.

i run catahoula blackmouth crosses for decoying coyotes and trapping, never had any that i just hunted coon with but they will sure go trail a coon. if you like to hear a dog on trail the curs are not the one, maybe you could get them to open up somehow i dont know, mine wont bay till thier looking at game, but if you are looking for shorter races and treed coons closer to the truck, curs might work good, i know some guys that use them just so they dont have to walk as far /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

ive hunted with mountain and bmc and there both great dogs but the mtn curs seem to cast out a little farther than the bmc, at least all the ones i have hunted around

The lineage of the Catahoullas is "varied", depending on the source.
The catahoulla is a "leopard catahoulla cur" , the Leopard cur is a Cur crossed with treeing hound, years back.
They are different "breeds" "Maybe"
I know guys will tell me "Thats not right", it may not be, but the records of the early "Cur" breeds are very vague.
There are a few good books on the subject, if you want to make up your own mind about the history.
My experience with "Curs", has been close range,(till game is jumped, then they won't quit) and silent on track. Mine only "open" when they see game. Also mostly med to hot nose.
Hope this helps.

If ya want a open mouth dog get the leopard cur as they are mostly open and have real good noses on them as well, I'm mainly a bear hunter but catch a few lions, bobcat and coon each year as well. I switched to these dogs about 20 years ago and will hunt them till I can't.
Mike

Mike, I feel the same about mine, and I agree, that if you want a "Cur with voice" Get a leopard.I like my silent dogs, but I need some voice on track at times.Three of my crosses, are wideopen on a track.I run those three on bears and lions w/ a Walker. My other dogs I run other game.6 out of nine dogs I'm runnin right now have "Cur blood".

All the dogs I have are open mouth but I like that on bear, if I ran fox or yotes only I think I would go w/ semi to no mouth type dogs and I think on hogs and bobcat ya would catch more game as well w/ a still mouthd dog. Have a good1, Mike

I run silent dogs mostly on yotes, badgers, and hogs, sometimes on a cat, also some "bloodtrailin". The key is to use dogs that work, for what you are huntin. My dogs are not "real fast" so no voice, lets them get close to the game. Not any type of expert, but what I do works for me. Duane.

I have two curs, a Ladner Blackmouth and a Kemmer cur. They are both good coon dogs, although I prefer the blackmouth. They are smarter and more people oriented. They both tree squirrels also, and I'm thinking about using my blackmouth as a decooy dog, too. They are both silent on track, coon or squirrel, although they will sometimes bark on a hot track.

I got two from a guy here in Calif. that are out of some good cat&fox dogs that will tree a coon when he wants them too they are MT.curs striker x streak bred
