If you are talking about recurves or long bows which I beleive you are then ck out www.3riversarchery.com. You can get alot of good info from these guys and you can order the Tradittional Arhery Magazine from them. The magazine has alot of do it DIY kits and info. Also ck with the bowyer who builds Brackenbury Bows. I forgot his name but he can be of great help also.Do a Tradittional Archery search on the internet an get alot more info. For me I will keep shooting my Black Widow.

Welcome to my hell. I've been fiddling with making my own bows for a little while know. I have to tell you it involves a lot of trial and error.

What kind of bow are you thinking about making? Most people opt to go with a laminated bow because they are a little easier to work with and they use modern materials so they are generally more efficient. As said above, 3 rivers archery has a lot of traditional bowyer supplies. I buy all my laminations and "kit" supplies from Bingham Products (www.binghamprojects.com). They're webpage is a little tough to follow, but they've got pretty much everything you need, including some handy kits that are pretty much all inclusive. To help get you started, check out www.stickbow.com. They've got step by step instructions on building laminated bows (there's also some literature available from Bingham that gives you step by step instructions).

If you're going with a self bow, then I really can't help you much. They, in my opinion, require a little more skill to master. You can find a whole wealth of information on this subject by reading The Traditional Bowyer's Bible (I beleive there are 3 volumes). They've got more info than you can every take in.

Good luck!

I've done both and will say that while a self bow is easier to work, it's much harder to succeed. All of my glass/wood lam bows have been successful. Some moreso than others! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

The above referenced Bingham projects is a good place to buy your supplies as is Old master crafter (do a google).

They are like building a house. If the foundation is perfect you can build a perfect structure. In this case, the foundation is your form.

If you are going to engage this bow building as a disease, then go ahead and get started! If you want only one bow, you will be able to buy a very nice bow new or used for the same or less money than to build one.

Your first bow will probably cost you in the neighborhood of $250 and easily more! Depends on what kind of tools you have on hand. Thereafter, subsequent bows will run you $75 to $120 depending on your choice of components. You can buy a very nice used recurve or long bow on ebay for $50 to $175.

I build with a minimum of power tools and believe me, it's hard work!

The Stickbow resource above is an excellent place to start building your knowledge without making any $$ investment.
