custom build

Okay guys I have the bug to either buy or build a new rifle! I need a little help with making up my mind on what I want to do! I currently have two AR's 1 RRA Coyote and also a custom 204 and I also have a Tikka varmint 22-250 which I like all of my guns very much but I just have the need for something else. I have been thinking about buying another Tikka in 204,223 or 25-06 but the last few days I have really wanted to get a 220 swift! I know that my 22-250 comes very close to what the swift can do but for some reason I have the bug for one and I am not sure if I can shake it.

So this is my problem I can buy a Cooper Phoenix or maybe go with a savage build. I have never built a bolt action rifle before so I am not sure where to start. I am going to use this gun for coyote hunting and I have some places in the midwest that can be pretty long shots. I really think that I want to build a rifle in the 220 swift so if you have any good info on where to buy everything at that would be great. And I do reload so that will not be a issue. I would like the price of this to be under $1300.00 with out glass because thats about what I can get the cooper for.

Thanks in advance
Bill

I am on the tail end of my savage build. I have faced a few obstacles but once the parts came in the actual work is very easy and I am a novice. My savage build is a 6mm remington. I picked up a majority of the parts from sharp shooter supply.com. They use a douglass xx barrel. Many people say you dont have to use go and no go gauges I did and they worked very well. If your not sure what the project is all about go to youtube and do a search for savage rebarrel. There are many other barrel manufacturers pacnor, lothar walther, shilen, er shaw, mcgowan, etc. If you have any other questions I'd be glad to help.

Bill,

If you look at my custom 22 Dasher in the classifieds, it comes in at your budget, and it'll save you the headaches of putting your own together, and you can start wackin' yotes ASAP. You can't build one comparable at that price.

alf nailed it.
If you want a custom rig, buy one used. You win every time. You save bunches on money, and the time it takes for the smith to build the rifle.
I'll guarantee you that, buying a used rifle from someone who has taken good care of it, that you'll be miles ahead.

For some guys its not about the money saved. It s about taking that completed rifle that you built with your own hands and making it shoot .25in groups. YOu can buy custom hot rods for a lot less than you can build one for but there is a certain level of appreciation and enjoyment that comes from doing it yourself.

Touche, I didnt see that he said that. If thats the case then definitely buy one, save the ash for ammo or calls or god knows whatever else we tell ourselves we have to have.

There has been alot of good info mentioned and it really has me thinking about what to do. I am going to think about it for a few more weeks and keep reading some more post on here and also look into building a savage/stevens. I found a website that I can get a stocks at and now I just have to look into a good barrel for it.

Keep the ideas coming and I will let you know when I figure it out.

Thanks
Bill

I have always wanted a 220 swiftAI..... Less case stretch and a litte more ooomph than a regular 220 swift.... but not as much powder as a 22-243 or 22-6mm..... I think enuf powder for the 22 cal..... I think a 10 or 11 twist maybe even a 12 twist... The swiftAI would not need as much twist as a 223 to stbilize the same weight bullets becuz of faster fps(higher rpms)...would be enuf for up to 90 gr bullets as fast as the swiftAI would be pushing them....

I have wanted to get one of the lothar walther barrels.... have someone chamber it and thread it for a savage nut or remington nut... so you could headspace it yourself on your action.... Maybe get a tight neck...
do your own stockwork if you want to....

For me it would be fun to build it up on a savage on an econmomy budget and see how well it would shoot....
just some rambling on my ideas....

OK, After building my own rifles for the last few years, heres how Ive found the best way to go about it.

To start with, you need an action. Stevens is a great action but I prefer the Savage nodel 12 actions with the "light" accutrigger. The model 12 action is also stainless whis is another desireable feature for me. Northlander sells actions at a decent price and he's very good to work with. A model 12 action will run about $350 give or take. He will recomend a surface ground recoil lug. Get it!! its nice.
Then you need to decide what the function of your rifle will be, as in, hunting, target shooting, tactacle, etc etc. Look through McMillans web site to decide on the stock and color you want and order it. McMillan says 3-4 months wait but, it seems all the other custom manufacturers take about the same. McMillans are a little more expensive but they ARE worth it. When ordering the stock you will need to know your barrel contour so you need to know what barrel your ordering too. I recomend Shilen as a pre-chambered and fitted barrel in your choice of chamber and action. Northlander will be happy to help you out with that too and he carries several common barrels on his shelf if your lucky you could have your barrel pronto. if not he can order anything you need. If you decide to have your barrel built localy, just order one of the many barrel blanks from Midway USA and take the barrel to your smith for the work. The barrel will run anywhere from $200-400 depending on the bells and wistles.
Now your right in the $1000-$1200 area for a very custom rifle built to your specs, from here on out you can spice it up even more. for about $100 you can send your action to Fred at Sharp Shooters Supply and have it timed and trued (I highly recomend this). He can also put on a tactacle bolt handle, fluted bolt body and, a compatition trigger for another $200 but thats just bling and not nessessary to the function or accuracy of the rifle.
Scope and good scope mounts and Your done. After the stock arives, bed it together and your ready to go shoot.
If you are worried about installing the barrel correctly, take it to a local smith and he can do it for a few bucks while you wait.
