
According to family legend, this buck was shot with what was referred to as a "cut load" by my step-grandfather in the UP of Michigan way back when. It is a poachers load as it is illegal to carry slugs when bird hunting outside of the deer season. As it was explained to me, a person would carry one of these "cut" loads in his pocket to use if he saw a deer he wanted to shoot. If stopped by a warden, it looked just like the other loads if the cut was done right above the brass with something sharp, like a razor. Back then, paper loads were all that they had and it worked well, according to the stories my uncles tell me.
