Cz 527 17 hornet barrel contour

Pretty much set on ordering a cz 527 17 hornet but can’t make my mine up on the American or Varmint the pics and videos if seen the Varmint doesn’t look that heavy more like a light Varmint. I do like a heavier barrel but not so heavy it hard the carry around some. for those that handled both what’s your opinion?

The American is pretty darn light and the Varmint is not near as heavy as most all other Varmint coutoured rifles.

I would be tempted to buy the american because of the cartridge chosen but ultimately I would most likely go with the Varmint. JMO

Having had two CZ 527 Americans (.223 Rem and .221 Fireball) I knew that when I bought my 527 in .17 Hornet that it was going to be the Varmint barrel. The slight difference is weight really helps in how nice the gun balances and shoots. I am having a bad day if I cannot get five shots into a half inch or less at 100 yards with mine. One of my shooting buddies who is also on this forum has a .17 Hornet CZ same as mine and it shoots every bit as good as mine does. While I might have one in American if the Varmint model was not available given a choice between the two I much prefer the Varmint. You betcha.

Oh, and my 527 .221 has a varmint weight barrel on it now too. Much better for me and my kind of shooting.

I own a CZ 527 Varmint in 17 Hornet. It's used exclusively for colony varmint shooting, so weight isn't a big issue to me. With that said, I wouldn't have any issues carrying it as a hunting rifle. It's simply a fantastic rifle (and cartridge!), very accurate and balanced. Also, one more thing to consider, there is much more meat on the varmint contour barrel for threading should you decide to do that in the future. Probably no issue with the American if you are going 1/2x28, but anything bigger and you will want the heavier contour.

I have two CZ 527 Varmint model 17 Hornets. One of them I had chopped back to 21 inches when it was in getting threaded and the other is standard length. The one that is still factory length weighs 8lbs 2oz and that is with the scope, rings and an empty mag. I'm not sure I've ever weighed my other one with its shorter barrel but it'd obviously be a few ounces lighter.

For me, the weight difference is minimal between the American and Varmint model and I prefer a little larger barrel profile so the Varmint model is the only one I'd ever buy but I think they both shoot equally well and we all like different things so get whichever one appeals to you the most.

As for shooting these things suppressed, they're not really all that loud to begin with, but you screw a suppressor on the end and they are crazy quiet and just adds to the enjoyment of shooting them.

I just bought a CZ527 varmint w/factory threaded barrel in 17 Hornet a few weeks ago. I chose the heavier contour since I do a lot of high volume bench shooting. The sporter barrels tend to heat up too quick which can effect accuracy in my experience.
Mine is a good shooter capable of .5 @ 100yds all day with the right ammo recipe. It did take about 150rds for the barrel to come in and the action to smooth out. It really likes the 15.5 NTX Hornady stuff, I shot a few .35'' groups with that stuff. Those groups always put a smile on my face.

I had a 4.5-14X on mine for a while but when I realized how well this rifle shot as far as 400 yards out there I did a swap with one of my lesser shot rifles and mounted a VX-III 6.5-20X on it and enjoyed the extra magnification. Idaho ground squirrels are pretty small targets so the higher power scope was a big help to my aging eyes.

I mounted a Hawke Vantage 6x24x44 with warne med rings.
I like the finer mil-dots with half mil hash marks. really helpful for hold over. Not bad glass for a scope that cost just over 2 bills

I have 2 of the 17 hornet varmints. Over 7000 rds. thru the pair. all p-dogs. They are really good shooters. I like the set trigger and have a single shot adapter. get about 200 rds. between cleanings. for 275 an the little 17 is absolute death on p-dogs. I shoot my 204's for 300 to 450 and q 6mm creed for further.

Lucky man! I have only got to use mine on ground squirrels so far but it works so well that I have pretty much quit using my other centerfires except for my custom barreled .221 FB. Out to 300 yards or so the little Hornet seems to kill just as well as my .204 and .223 rifles do. And I sure do like how I can get in some hot and heavy shooting and the barrel never heats up appreciably. At 12 grains per case, a pound of CFE BLK last a long time too. Just a couple more months away from squirrel season. I can hardly wait as always.

CFE BLK is a great powder for the 17HH its just about all I use any more for 20GR or 25GR bullets. I have a CZ Varmint and the Savage 25 WV both are tack drivers.
