CZ 527 17 Hornet barrel length

I’ve got a 17 hornet that I’m having the barrel cut down and threaded for a suppressor. It’s currently 24 inches and I’m probably going to make it 20 or 18 inch. My question is has anyone went from 24 inch to 18 or 20 inch and what was the loss in velocity? I’m probably splitting hairs but I would like to go 18 inch if there isn’t a big loss in velocity compared to 20 inch.

Thanks

You should be just fine lopping off a few inches of barrel. I dont think that is going to be an issue. The .17 Hornet is a very efficient cartridge and not overbore at all. If you go to a 20" barrel I doubt if you lose more than 50 fps.

I have the same 527 that you do and it really has quickly became one of my delights. One of my best shooting buddies and contributor here loves his as well.

+1 to what Russ said. I might also add that even if you lose 125-150 fps run the ballistics and you ll see that's not a big deal with a 17 caliber bullet since their BC s are so low that affects you more than the fps loss. 18-20" should make for a dandy truck, squirrel type gun!

Report your velocity change from prior to post shortening with the same load.
Good luck!

I've got two CZ 527 Varmint model 17 Hornets. My first one I had a few inches cut off when it was in getting threaded, if I recall, it's right around 21 inches now. My other one I haven't lopped any off of that one, yet, but they shoot within 60fps of each other. Even though it's a tiny little bore, they aren't using much powder, so it doesn't take much barrel length to burn it all up.

If you want it much shorter than about 21 inches, whoever you have cut it down will likely have to remove the barrel though.
