CZ 527 stock swap

Using my cz 527 with the B&C stock for coyotes and such this year but I’m having issues with my hand cramping up holding the rifle too long. I wear a large glove so I thought the swell wouldn’t be a problem but I don’t get the cramps with my hogue stocked Howa 1500 or any of my savages. My AR has a great hogue swell grip but for this beauty I can’t do that. So I’m thinking about a Boyd’s featherweight thumb hole. I like the looks of that game scout stock that Master Blaster is running but I didn’t see they had it for the cz. What’s everyone’s take? Am I holding it wrong or being a baby?

If your hand is cramping up I don't consider that being a baby. I would say you need to go a different route for sure. I don't know what's available for those, but I don't know that I'd want a thumbhole for hunting unless you've tried one before. It seems like they are kind of slow to put into action IIRC. I take it you don't have the original stock any more?

It is the original stock, and I really like it looks and all but yeah. My hand cramps up after 10-20 minutes. At the range it does it too. I’d like to go McMillan or some high class. Boyd’s seems to add a good bit of weight and is wood which seems like a negative for a rifle that’s used in ranges from -20 to monsoon to 108 and no rain in 100 days. But it looks close to a pistol grip which I really like for shooting. Maybe the pro Varmint?

What I meant was a wood CZ stock. I don't think the CZ Varmint model walnut stock has a palm swell. Do your hand cramp using other rifles? Might be something other than the stock.

Nope, hasn’t cramped with the others and they all have a slight swell. AR has a good bit of swell but the B&C stock has a huge swell. Manners has a nice looking stock for the cost of the rifle... all laminate stocks that CZ uses are Boyd’s from the factory. Only their walnut is theirs.

You couldn't pay me to strap a rifle into anything by Boyds.

There are a couple of solutions; stop gripping the rifle like you are going to choke it, or...remove the palm swell. Its fiberglass...fiberglass is amazingly easy to work with.

Nah it’s the hand position. I don’t grip tightly, hardly there but I keep the hand cupped around. Arthritis runs in the family, maybe it’s my first sign =O haha. I dunno, Boyd’s pro Varmint has a lot of good comments and then others have a horror story. Who else is making stocks for CZ?

I have three Boyd's stocks. Two on Savages and one on a Mauser. All three are very good solid stocks. The Pro Varmint while being a good solid stock......is HEAVY! Between the 26" long barrel and the PV stock, that thing is a tank. Something to consider. If you like the stock thats on your rifle now except the palm swell, rasp that swell off and just repaint the stock. I still think the CZ kevlar stock could be traded or sold and get you into something you like better.

I was shooting more today and I don’t think it’s the swell alone. More of the swell plus the high thumb placement. To sit with my thumb running properly in line it creates an awkward tension to hold it while seated. I don’t wanna trade to something else really and played with a few Boyd’s tonight at the store. The pro Varmint was nice but had no swell and my hand had a gap, the evolution has a perfect swell but funky overall. Maybe I’ll just call McMillan, they sell partial inletted stocks, maybe they could do me a custom! Also saw B&C has another stock option with a “pistol grip”. Maybe I could call and see what they’ll do. Looks funky but full of nice features

Just looking at store models and pictures isn't going to tell you if you will still have your cramps. Seems like you would/should spend some time behind one to see if your problem comes back and if you like the stock. You also might talk to your Doctor and see if he could prescribe something to relieve the pain or fix the problem.

True pyscodog. I wish there was a way to just plug in and see what was wrong haha. I may just change up how I hold this stock while on stand. Instead of keeping it up and ready I’ll let the butt down and just rise up when ready to shoot.

Just throwing it out there but you might change up your style of hunting. They make a tripod that holds your rifle in a ready position. Not sure the name but I have seen them. Just another idea.

McMillan will say no to the custom... so will Manners.

It’s odd to me that you can find plenty of aftermarket stocks for 452/455 or even the 550, but for some reason the industry pretends like the 527 doesn’t sell well.

I got enough of it, and started building ground up customs a few years ago. I still have some 527s, but haven’t messed with them in a while.

I think a lot of the issue is that they have traditionally shipped with high quality stocks, so the need for upgrades isnt as prevalent.

Better than most, for sure. I’d still bet that Manners could sell thousands of MCS-T stocks inletted for the varmint, or EH 6 or 8 inletted for the sporters.
