CZ 527 varmint..another "What's it worth"

A local shop has a CZ Varmint in 223. Wood stocked and what CZ calls their varmint. The stock shows signs of a lot of use and there is surface rust on the metal. Nothing a little while with solvent and elbow grease would probably fix. Also has a Simmons 6.5-20 scope. WooHoo! I think its over priced but I'm asking as I could be wrong.I made an offer and got turned down. At least this time.

Well new they are $675 to your FFL, the scope is a throw away. So I'd put the price in the condition your talking $350-$400 maybe a little less depending if you trust the bore to be in good condition with the abuse to the rest of the rifle.

What it really depends on is how bad the seller wants to get rid of it and how bad some one wants a beat up CZ 223.

Its far from "Slick or pristine" but isn't hammered. Bumps and such on the stock. Bore, with the naked eye didn't look bad and it is a 223. The rust on the barrel is surface and not pitting. I was going off new price and they are within $80 of new. I agree about the scope. I offered $500 and he turned me down. I know what they have in it and at $500 he's making money. A considerable amount at that. I got two buddies that work there and they told me what he paid for it. LOL! Nice to have friends in a gun shop. I don't really need it but wouldn't mind having it. Not bad enough to pay premium priced though.

I'd let it go. You might as well go new for $80-$100 more. Or wait a few months and try again as it is just eating a hole in his pocket on the shelf.

My thoughts to AWS. It sets long enough and he might be a little easier to deal with. He's kinda in the wrong part of Tulsa to be selling varmint rifles. Most customers want gangster stuff, other than the reloaders.

I'm betting your LGS did not allow more than $250, if that, on
that rifle. I tried to trade in a bolt action with my LGS and
they wouldn't even give me an offer, saying that they just
couldn't move bolt actions. About all they have in the racks
are black rifles like AR's and other semi-autos. Rambo
prevails!!!

I was told they had $300 in it. I offered $500 and he turned me down. Thats the most I would pay and they can keep the Simmons.

I think that was smart, Bill. I paid $365 for my 527 American .223 and it had a Sightron scope on it. The dolt had camo painted the beautiful walnut stock but that's was OK as I had a spare. Fine shooting gun.

The store manage said he would take my offer but he know the owner wouldn't. Like I was saying...don't really need it but wouldn't mind having it. There will be others if the want is still there.

This is why I ended up with a Savage Axis on clearance at Walmart, $198, then 5.5% tax. I’ve not been a big Savage guy but so far I’m liking it. They had a 243 for the same price, I wanted & got the 22-250.

dang, i think you offered a premium for it at $500.

the pawn shop should jumped all over that. and i know for a fact the pawn joints around here wouldn't of gave over about $150 for it. they steal every gun they buy.

Not a pawn shop Slick, local gun and reloading shop. I use to work there. I thought $500 was a more than fair price.

A week or so ago when I went in the store, the manage told me he had something I needed. They know I like HB varmint rifles. He showed me the CZ. I told him it was over priced then. A few days ago I went back in and one of the other guys told me what they had in it and I told him again it was over priced and I'd give them $500 for it. Today it was the same story. I offered $500 and got turned down again. I'm out! Maybe someone else will buy it but it won't be me.

I think $500 is a good offer and they are crazy for not taking it. Not that's it's a bad offer, I think you'd walk away with a really nice rifle for a good price, but most people walking in there aren't going to know what CZ stands for. They are going to see the few dings and rust and walk on by. If they are asking more than $500, it's going to be sitting on their shelf for a while I'd think. I'd go back in a month and offer them $450. . .

Its kinda strange, usually a reasonable cash offer will buy a firearm there. The owner likes cash deals! He must think he's setting on a gold nugget with this one. I personally haven't talked to the owner. The manager just keeps telling me that he won't take $500 for the rifle. IDK? I think I'll let it set for a while longer before going back.

The problem is that some people see decent looking walnut on a production rifle and automatically assume its worth millions. Regardless of condition. I usually sell well used BDLs for $400-$450 and the people buying them think they're all but robbing me when they buy it solely because the minty ones go for $600.
I'm with you, id probably go for it at $500 OTD with the scope too and try to turn the scope around and recoupe a little.

$500 id say is on the high side in the condition its it but im surprised they didnt take it.

Theres a sucker born every day, thats probably who the owner is trying to reel into it. Shame.

Well I've bought my fair share of CZ rifles and only bought one new (won a lever henry 17hmr that I traded in) and it was his last 17 remington.

Here's what I bought all in really good condition (no rust, no significant dings) all used:

CZ550 Varmint Kevlar .22-250 (actually didn't know it at the time, but it's pretty rare)- $620 after taxes (Gun shop)
CZ527 Varmint Laminate .223 - $580 (Gun Broker)
CZ527 Varmint .222 remington (discontinued)- $500 with 8-32 Muller target scope (Armslist)

The fact that the one you are looking at has some rust and dings in the stock and in a cartridge that is still in production your $500 is more than fair. Like I said, go back in a month and offer $450.

I've bought and sold a few CZ's as well. I know it would be tough trying to get my money back or even most of it even at $500 in the condition it is in. It most definitely needs some TLC. The surface rust on the barrel doesn't bother me much, but the stock will take some work to get it looking good. I always wonder if the outside looks like this, what's the inside look like? With no bore scope and just looking with the eye, it doesn't look bad. Looks can be deceiving.
