CZ 550 Varmint groups

Hopefully more of a group and less of a "pattern"! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
From what I have heard, most of the CZs group real well right out of the box. I am sure with good handloads it will be a shooter!

HMMMM... right now it's more like a pattern. Ha ha

I have just started reloading and shot some today.

The 35 gr. Varget and a 50 gr. v-max is shooting a .831" group.
Do you suppose that's as good as it will get without doing any work to the gun, or do I continue to experiment with the reloads?

.831 isnt the worst in the world /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

are you seating the bullet close to the rifling ?

and sometimes, even a half-grain powder change can close the group.

looking at load listings, you have lots of choice in powders,
and if you get into the reloading, then perhaps some RE15 or another listed powder would be fun to try.

Timbertoes-
The bullet is .013 off the rifling. I have tried the IMO 4064 and didn't shoot well, also didn't care for the way it metered. The groups definitely tightend up when I switched to the Varget.
I have tried the Winchester White box. It shot well, but for some reason had a hard time chambering about 25% of the rounds.
Although .831 is a decent group, if my rifle is capable of shooting a tighter group then that's what I would like. I realise that I am a big part of this since I am the one pulling the trigger.
I am just wondering the rifle if in good hands is capable of tightening up. If not then I have found the round that my rifle likes.

Thanks for your help

Interesting about the white box...that cant be good. but its more fun to choose the bullet you want to shoot.

I understand, it is hard, even with sandbags and such to keep the scope right on the same spot!

my two highest power scopes are 14x and 24x, at full magnification. the 24x you can very much see a 1" square to line the crosshairs on, the 14x,the more shooting skills I need. Sure am glad the Coyotes are pretty big target!

Is your .83 group mostly evenly dispersed or does it "string" in a row ?

I have loaded up some 34.5 gr and 35.5 gr with a 50 gr bullet and some 34.5, 35, 35.5gr with a 55 gr bullet.
I cleaned the primer pockets, cleaned and deburred the flash hole. I'll see what those do.

I wish I knew if my gun out of the box is capable of shooting a .5 group or less @ 100 yards.

Labman,

I'd glass bed the action and make sure the barrel is freefloated. And maybe check the crown.

Then I would play with OAL on the best shooting loads you have. I have seen 22-250's shoot better with some bullet jump. Try .080" off the lands and work your way to touching the lands if the magazine and/or chamber will allow it.

BTW,
Honest, consistant, .5" groups can be harder to get from a factory setup than a lot of people think. As you may already know, many of the internet rifles that shoot .5" groups all day long, if I do my part, don't include flyers. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif There is a reason, many benchrest shooters put thousands of dollars into rifles plus shooting gear.

You could pay to have it done, and if you do that, I would have the gunsmith crown the barrel too. But It is not very hard to do yourself. Buy some brownells acra glass, and some sandpaper.

Use the sandpaper and a dowel rod or piece on conduit to sand the part of the stock that is touching the barrel. When you can fold a dollar bill and slip it between the barrel and stock and slide it from one end of the barrel to the other, it is free floated. Some people like a bigger gap than a folded $1 bill. That laminated stock is pretty stiff, so you could go bigger if you like. Your rifle may be already freefloated.

As far as glass bedding the action, do a little search. There are hundreds of examples on the net. Just be sure to use release agent before you squish the action down into the bedding gel. If you forget that step, believe me, you won't be happy.

If you can't find any info, send me a PM, and I'll give you directions. It isn't hard to do.

Here's one instruction page.
