well its getting to be that time of year again where i start to clean up all my traps and stock up on supplies.
so i figured i'd put together a little step-by-step for others who like doing things theirselves or might be a little short on cash.
sooooooooo...... here goes
step 1:
get the necessary supplies together
--for the stake you will need 3/32" steel cable, two 1/4" nuts
, and a section of 1/2" i.d. steel pipe
--tools you will need are a drill with bit slightly larger than cable, reciprocating saw w/ metal blade, a vice, and a hatchet or other way to cut the cable.
step 2:
cut the cable two and a half inches longer than you want your stake to be. in this case i cut it 26.5" for soft ground stakes. (yes i know the tape says 26" even)
--hint: if you put the cable on something hard such a the vice and hit it with the hatchet it will cut cleanly every time.
step 3:
cut the pipe on both sides so it looks like a trapezoid when viewed from the side( thanks geometry)
i make the longer side about 2.75" and the shorter is about 2.25"
step 4:
drill the shorter side dead center but only through one side.
step 5:
thread the cable down through the hole you just made and out one side
step 6:
crimp a nut on the end of the cable about 1/4" from the end
step 7:
thread the other end of the cable through a nut and then back through creating a loop. crimp the nut.
now you have a completed cable stake add it to the pile
step 8:
the driver:
start with a 5/8" steel rod. grind down the last inch to about 1/2" and drill a 1/4" hole through the rod 3/4" form the same end.
pound a 1/4" bolt through the hole and grind it even with the other side........your done
to drive the stakes pre-punch a hole with a piece of rebar and load it on the driver like so...
and push it down the premade hole. then pull up to set the stake sideways. attach a trap with a quicklink and your ready to go.
all in all this process takes me about 3-4 minutes and costs about 60 cents per stake. they hold up great and will anchor an elephant( well at least a baby one)
any questions just ask
