Dassies + American Rockchucks

Anybody ever hunted Dassies in South Africa? they are very similar to the Rockchuck. The Dassie is a small critter and looks like a Rockchuck, it is related to an elephant due to its buildup etc. These critters are staple diet for black eagles and other predators, they have a membrane that covers the eye so they can look directly into the sun and spot hawks and eagles about to dive bomb them. They eat a sheeps grazing area in 4 days and are considered problems on some farms. We hunt them for that reason and also to use them as bait in cages for lynx trapping. They make a realistic baiting lure ;-) but we also leave them on rocks to help the black eagle population in breeding season.

The Dassie can be hunted on farms from 20 yards in the rocks to 1000 yards. Its good fun and often father and son get good companionship on such a hunt. I have put photos of the Dassie under PREDATOR HUNTING on the forums, it was called More pictures from South Africa.

A typical Dassie reaches about just over a foot long and the meat is very sour.

Anybody in the USA ever hunted Dassies in South Africa?
