Daylight savings yote.

Forgot about the time change and got out there an hour early this morning. Dad and myself haven’t hunted together in a while so we just had a coffee in the truck catching up while we waited for legal light. At 3 mins after legal light I catch a yote entering the field at 800-850 yards heading slowly down wind from left to right on the field. Once it dipped behind a hill we moved in to where we planned to make a stand and got set up. Due to the direction it was headed I was sure we would see it again as wind wasn’t exactly favourable.

An hour later I spot movement at 600-650 yards coming from the opposite side of the field just mousing a little. She cut the distance pretty quick to 450-470 yards and turned broadside. Dad finally spotted it and I was hoping dad could get a crack at it so we let it come in. Unfortunately with no caller it was anyone’s guess as to where it would go which was my only hesitation and was going take the shot at 450-470 yards. It started working its way in and up wind so it was in our favour. It crossed the lane way and went behind a knoll at 330 ish yards. I told dad to get ready as once it pops over the knoll it would be between 250 and 300. It took a few moments but sure enough it popped over and came in to 262 and stopped perfect broadside. I told dad to shoot but he couldn’t see it and was looking in the opposite direction as he anticipated it to pop up on the other side closer to where the bait was. He wasn’t able to get on it so he told me to shoot and the 35gr Berger found its mark and the coyote expired very quickly. First one for the 35gr bergers for me as I’m looking for a better fur friendly bullet during prime seasons as I normally shoot 39gr blitzkings.

Nice going!

So you have opening & closing times for the daytime hunts?

Here in Wisconsin it's 24/7/365 for coyotes.

We can hunt them 365 but 30 mins before legal sunrise and 30 mins after legal sunset, that goes for all of our hunting. No night hunting in Ontario unless it’s coons and you need a licensed dog

Congratulations on the success. Looks healthy.

Grab a couple hand calls man! You will be surprised how effective you can be. Even lip or hand squeaking can be effective at 300 yards or more.

The 35gr Berger is an exceptional fur bullet. Shot them for years in 204 and only ever had 1 exit.

I have a 2 hand calls, one that’s worked very well in the past which I forgot that day.

That’s good to know. You read they are excellent but I’ve never used them on any game previous to this coyote. I was shocked how much blood there was for no exit and couldn’t really see the hole.
