decoy and scent

Has anyone used a rabbit type decoy along with a cover/attractant scent like, well, rabbit urine? If so, how effective is it or is there a way to know? Is it available commercially or do ya have to squeeze your own?

Hey Flatshot,

You'll get all sorts of opinions on this, but yes, I've used both and had success with both, sometimes alone or in concert with each other. I used to throw out a decoy, before decoys were invented commercially for predator hunting, consisting of a stolen "thumper" disney stuffed animal my daughter had. That worked pretty good in the riverbottoms on the South and North Platte rivers, I'd just tie on like 10lb test to it and tug on it occasionally. As far as the urine or musk is concerned....I tried squeezing my own once, but the local PD intervened and....nevermind. You can pick up all sorts of scents from www.huntsmart.com . Peruse what they have and go from there. Spraying some coyote urine in the air I hear works pretty good for an attractant, but haven't had the chance to incorporate that in my calling routine yet. www.Tail-Wagger.com has a super interesting decoy that's been mentioned in a couple of threads on here, just do a search and bingo..it'll show up.

Well, I just thought that as long as I was spending all this time and effort to sound like a thoroughly pissed rabbit, that maybe it wouldn't hurt if it smelled like one too. Who knows.
Hey Bob, when ya coming back to the Good Life? Nice and snowy. Cold. Sure you miss all that.
I'll check around on the scents and see whats available before I try the real thing. I don't need a cameo on no Cop show!

Actually you could do better than that Mike. If you store your hunting clothes in rabbit bedding too it is like a coyote magnet. LOL

Hi Flatshot. Seriously though, I have used a rabbit decoy with rabbit urine before. Although I have called coyotes with this set up, I can't say for sure whether the rabbit urine played any role. Personally I would think the spray bottle idea would be more effective. You would be able to disperse it over a wide area downwind of your decoy by misting the air. It would cling to the foliage downwind. I have not tried the spray bottle yet so I'm guessing here. Have read very experienced callers writings who claim it works though. The scent is commercially available from many hunting and trapping supply sources.

Good luck

I think scenting up a decoy with rabbit scent is fine but I surely dont want to smell like one expecially while hunting at night. That big ole black bear might come along and think this is going to be the biggest rabbit I've ever eaten.

I take my blow bunny decoy and place it in my friends rabbit hutch for a day or two.I lays flat so they walk and do their duty all over it.I put it in a zip lock bag until I use it.Blow Bunny is available from www.crowhilldecoy.net

Well, no bears to worry about out here in the flatland, although I did call a bald eagle in the other day. I didn't have the decoy with me. Wonder if it might have gone home with the eagle if I had used it. Actually, I was thinking of using a little scent just on the ground near the decoy rather than having to worry about handling or storing a stinky faux bunny every time. I'll run some field trials here just as soon as the snow stops moving sideways at 60mph. Man I wish yous guys up in SD would plant some trees!
