O.K guys need some help here for a rookie. What is the general concept for using dogs to decoy coyotes? Do you just call and let your dog wander in front of you??? Also what breed of dog would be most adept for this style of hunting ... curs???
Thanks in advance for any help getting me started.

Dogs develop a knack for attracting coyotes and getting the wild dogs to follow them back to a hunter. I usally call and my Choc. Lab sits rite next to me, or out in frontjust a bit. Once the coyote is spotted my dog wants to go and fight with this yote. The coyotes see the other dogs in there area, so they come to check them out. The dogs you can use are allot I have seen Jack Russia's to Lab's and cur's. There is many dogs you can use

As a decoy dog you are wanting your dog out there keeping the coyotes eyes off of you, just like a decoy. For the dogs sake don't let him get farther out than you can shoot. Which varies w/ the gun you're using to how well you can shoot.
Your dog has to come when you whistle. No calling w/ your voice while hunting. Coyotes will tolerate a gun shot better than a human voice.
I perfer the Mtn Curs for many reasons. Their grit, brains, loyality, agility, they're cheap, short haired, etc.

i see theres some guys from back east using decoy dogs, how well does this work for our area, do you have to be in an open area or can u use these guys in some of the thicker stuff we have here

E.L.K. inc. put out a video called Dogging Coyotes featuring Murphy Love and Merv Griswold hunting yotes in Northern Wyoming with dogs. If you can watch this video you will see how they do it .This is hunting where the dogs go out and mix it up with the coyotes then turn and bring them right in to the hunters. After a coyote is shot and the others start to leave the dogs go out and bring the coyotes right back in. The video explains the type of dogs that are used. E.L.K. If your dog has the brains and a good nose you can teach it to do any type of decoy work you ask of it.I teach mine to go to a howling yote,I also teach them to wind yotes. Many times they will go over half a mile and bring the yote back in tow.The yote will keep all of its interest on the dog and you get to plant him. When the yote is shot and the dog goes to wool it over most yotes in the area will come and fight the dog .I have decoyed yotes all over the west and it works the same anywhere. The dogs work super when yotes are denning like in the video with griswold. It takes a much better dog when they are just out hunting.I use Kemmer Mnt Curs.

I have the first Vern Dorn video that O'Gorman's sells.

It just makes your head spin as to the effectiveness of a good denning/decoy dog!!

Three 44s

I also have a new video out called "Going to the Dogs". It is all hunting with decoy dogs. It is available here in PM's shopping cart or at All Predator Calls.com. I think you guys might find it entertaining. I use mostly Dorn bred dogs, but have a good mountain cur also.

MavCurs what traning techs do you use to get them to tow the Yote in? I'd love to learn more and purchace a Cur myself.

I start my curs very early around 12 weeks old most times.I take them calling and let then see dead yote and get used to shooting.I have a yote in a cage and a remote holwer next to it.I let the pup go down wind then hit the remote and it howls--most of the pups will go to the yote and fuzz up and bark or growl. This is the starting point and it takes many more days afeild to make a good decoy dog.It would take many pages to tell all of the tricks and methods we use to train a decoy dog.See ya Mav

I am new to this web sight I have two black mouth moutain curs an I am interested in geting them startedThe female is just a year and the male is almost two.The female is well mannered and bright the male is a reject from someone else and had a bad athority problem. that is mostly fixed nowI uderstand the use of collars for obidence but what type do you use for hunting.I got to see my ex brotherinlaws dogs work years ago Daryl Fry of Elco but that was many years ago and havent been in touch since I left the family

Where did you boys get your Kemmer stock? I have a little OMCBA registered cur pup that has alot of Kemmer blood in her. I'm going to start training her soon on coyotes.

My preacher's grandpa was A.D. Ledbetter, maybe you have heard of him. He had Catoosa Tige and the Dan Boone dog. Robert Kemmer got some of his foundation stock from these dog's descendents.

I saw Robert's son, Roy yesterday. He told me they are still shipping alot of Kemmer cur's out west. I think I'll stick with my little female and breed her with a big Busher bred Mtn. Cur in this area. Should push the pups up to the 60 lbs or better mark. I guess we will see.

There is another way to use your dog to bring coyotes back to your call. It's been along time since I've posted here so. Hope I can start off on a good note. This invloves useing dogs to toll coyotes during the fall. Breeds really don't seem to matter. I use a airedale. People have used JackRussels,Labs, shorthairs and cures. you will need to train the dog to responed to a tone on a e-collor. You want the dog to return to the call on the tone. The coyote( may or my not) should fallow the dog back into the call.(just my bad since of humor). The rest is up to you. The dogs reward he gets to wool on the coyote. Or you make a bad shot you get to watch a good chase and capture.
distances are not as tight as you might think in open ground I've seen close to 500 yrds and the dog return with the coyote in tow.I have made it sound allmost to simple. You still have to call coyotes with out being seen or winded or again a halfadozen things that can and still go wrong. In the end it's just more fun with a dog.
