Hello, I've been lurking here for awhile and finally got on board. I have been toying with the idea of getting a couple of dogs for my three boys. They have been pestering me to get some for pets but also for coyote hunting. They love to go calling when we have time. Are Mountain curs or Catahoulas (sp) decent dogs for kids between 11 and 16. We live in Idaho around Idaho Falls and have a decent coyote population. I need help in making some logical decisions with this. Just because they want dogs like this doesn't meen it the smart thing to do. I truly thank you for your time and patience with us. D /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

i just got a moutain cur for the same purpose as you. I would recommend the moutain cur(from my experience the catahoulas are mostly hog and squirrel dogs) This breed is one of the most versatile dogs around they are easy to trainand excellent with the family. make sure to get one that is not to aggresive you dont want it attacking coyotes. are you going to be helping with the hunting and training? hope this helps some if you need any more help ill try to help out!!!

Thanks Joe, Yes I will be helping with the training. I think I would like to stick with the mountain curs but I do know of a guy in Idaho falls that uses the catahoulas for coyotes and claims their very good. I need to find someone that has puppies. I do apreciate any info you can give me. I've heard also that these dogs bark all the time is that true. Does it drive the neighbors nuts? thanks again, D

the barking is much like any other dog you have to control it! my dog likes to bar while she is playing with other dogs. she will fight then step back and bark at them, which i have been told is a good sign. i hope she will act like that when coyotes are around. if the puppies come from dogs that hunt coyotes then you should not ahve a problem with them. it might come instintivly to them. my dog likes to chew on tree bark, and she has a high prey drive so she chases cats, birds anything she sees going by(unless i am there to stop her) good luck, keep us posted!!!

Appreciate the feed back, but there has gotta be more info out there than this. I know there are experienced men and maybe even women that can shed even more light on this than has been touch on here so far. Workman, when you say good luck is that sincere or is that good luck as in you haven't got a clue buddy about what your in for. I really want to know if the effort into looking for a dog and the bother is going to be worth all the effort. Do thank you for your efforts. thanks Joe for your help also. D

Dasher, there is a video about using dogs to decoy coyotes. It is from 2 Dog Productions and is called Going to the dogs. It shows info about set ups, ect. and the dogs they use are primaraly mountian curs. I talked to one of the guys that made the video when I ordered and he was very helpful with insight on types of dogs to use and their behavior. His partner also has a colum in Predator Extreme magazine on doggin coyotes and there is talk of an training video in the works.

I've used several different breeds of dogs for decoying. I haven't used the cur's but that is a breed that seems to be the rage right now. Might have to get a cur for my next dog.

The two best dogs I've used are the German Wirehair Pointer and a Chocolate Lab. The lab ahasn't got a aggressive bone in her body (unless she gets nipped coming back in) She won't even chase a coyote when she's around them. She just turns and heads back to me once she sees or smells a coyote.

The Wirehair was too aggressive, so she sat by my side till I was about 3/4 done calling then I would send her out. You can't imagine how many coyotes she smelled, spotted or heard coming in behind us. She was awesome at trailing all types of wounded game and would even retrieve coyotes when she was younger.

Hey JOENOVOSEL, Does the breeder that you got your dog from have any more pups? Are they in Salt Lake? Am interested in getting a coyote dog and am leaning toward the mountain cur. Any info would be helpful. Jason

wyote, Your input is very much appreciated. I love the picture. Maybe we'll get some labs or even a good cross. thanks again.

Wack, I could not find the video you mentioned. Do you know wher I can find it or the guy you said you talked to? thanks, D

Dasher, Look on All Predator Calls web site. The guy I talked to was Murphy Love and his partner is Calvin Taylor. The title is "Coyote Hunting is Going to the Dogs" by 2 Dog Productions.Calvin is the one that has a column in Predator Extreme magazine that focuses on doggin coyotes.

i have seen alot of coyote hunting videos with dogs. like was said check allpredatorcalls.com they have quite a few. i cant remember all the names of them. you can also look it up on youtube or google it. use dogging coyotes or decoy dogs. it should help.

My mountain cur is 9 months old now and is good around both my 6 year old and my 2 year old. He still has alot of pup in him obviously, but loves to hunt. For whatever reason I dont have the barking problem like some do unless he has the neighbors cat bayed in the bushes or treed. He has been so far really easily trained on most things and the hunting has come naturally. I have been around both of his parents alot and hunted with them as well so i know what a good thing I have to look forward to in a year or so.

Dasher, I sent you a PM.

Wyote, I have a Wirehair that I'm trying to train. May have the same problem with aggression but he sure loves to hunt.

Hey Gentlemen,
I truly appreciate the help your giving us. I finally found my PMs. thanks for your time. I'll be calling you guys that offered to Help. I have found a German Wirehair. Do You think this would be a wise choice? The owner of the pup says his parent are great hunters. My boys are bugging the crud out of me to get them a dog. I think we'll have two dogs at some point. Thanks Dasher

Dasher- if you have any questions or need any advice help or whatever feel free to PM or ask in a post, I've raised coonhounds to decoy dogs and a little in between. I hope you are aware of what you will putting the dog into.
