Decoy question while hunting coyotes

for those of you that use decoy's for coyotes. how far away do ya set up from the decoy? I got one of them fawn decoys from Edge today and was wondering how to set up with it. I'll either be usin the 22-250 or the 17 Fireball when I'm hunt coyotes. any and all advise is appreciated. thanks jeff.

About 10 or 20 yards with my rotating decoy. Depends a lot on where I can get the decoy so it has some visibility to the area, and then put myself where I've got cover.
I've even had it out 50 yards a time or two in open clearcuts.

It's pretty close cover here, though, and I'm eyeballing for bobcats.

Distance to decoy varies due to terrain, cover, and wind. Regardless, I want to be able to see the decoy and the likely locations of an approach toward the decoy.

Most of the time for me it's 30 yards or so away based on those factors. Also, keep in mind the "high likelihood" locations for an approach and don't be in alignment with the decoy. Otherwise you'll call in a coyote right where you thought it would come from and then it could see you move "behind" the decoy (line of sight).

i usualy put mine about 30 to 50 yards out. then i put the call itself right under the decoy, sometimes i pile giant sticks and leaves over it to make it sound like the animal is under the shrub, i figure they will stay longer trying to figure stuff out under that brush! sometimes i will use my edge foxxy fox decoy and put him staring at the decoy/brushpile. get them coyotes riled up!

Decoy's store scent...be careful how you store and transport it.

I had yotes run off with two of mine, a blue buggs bunny and a white hand puppet, "Lamb Chops". I have neve seen a yote stop running or slow down when they spot the decoy, like shooting at a greay hound on the race track.

Have Used a taned red fox hide proped up on sticks and a tanned badger hide, really confuses them when they see them near the call.

I put a dark colored sock full of sardines very near the decoys and be sure to watch your down wind side very carefully. I carry the sardines in a 1 lb coffee can and put the coffee can in a zip loc bag and keep it in the back of the truck.

Good luck!

Sardines! Why I would have them gone by the time I had them out to where I was supposed to put them. Especially if I brought crackers along. I consider sardines to be one of God's gifts to mankind. Dave
