Are deer antler hollow or solid and why?

Well, they are solid with lots of little tiny pores in the center for blood to flow through.

Here's what it looks like. This is Elk antler, it's a little more open than Deer, but you can see this easier.

then how do the make calls out of it? They make it look like it is naturally hollow...

You just drill it out.

I find it amazing how calls can be made from antler. Some of my best calls are made of antler. And the thing is, they all aren't just made of whitetail deer antler. I've seen calls made from Red Stag, Elk, Moose, Fallow, and Mule Deer antler. Simply awesome in my book.

Axis is my best antler for call's. it is solid like Ivory. make's a great call. there is just a Tiny hole. for blood. cool stuff. hardest is moose and Texas Whitetail very hard. muley is the worst. you can drill a hole then crazy glue to make solid thin kind. Rick
