Deer feeder ????'s

I am looking for a new electronic/spinner deer feeder that holds 200 -350lbs of feed.I normally just pour the corn around a tree as I feed large amounts but may have less time this year with new job so need something to do the work for me. Here is what I would like: Able to feed 1 time a day with No photo timer I set the time myself. Spin out 20-30 lbs of corn per spin time. And I would like a unit that was as quite as possaible as I don't what the guys next to me hereing it and sitting on the fence line. Any one know of such a beast?

Get the Cabela's catalog and order your feeder motor, get a 55gal drum (holds 350# of corn), buy a leg kit and assemble (or see below). Take the spinner plate off the motor and coat the BOTTOM of it with plasti-dip or some rubber coating and reinstall. You'll still have some noise but it'll be a fair amount quieter. The noise I hear from most feeders is the 'shish' sound of the corn being spun off the plate, but there will still be some noise from corn ricocheting off the legs and stuff.

I build my own leg kits from 6x6 1/8" steel plates with steel pipe about 2' long welded on. Then I use 10' galvanized fence post to slide up onto the barrel legs. It's cheap and pretty strong down here where we have pigs that like to push feeder legs around!

You guys might consider chain/rope hanging one of a branch or pully. I did that with a moultree once a few years ago. Worked great untill it wound up stolen.

Spin out 20-30 lbs of corn per spin time.
Are you serious? A 30 gallon barrel holds 200 pounds. It would be emty in 6-10 days at that rate. Do you have any idea how long it would have to run to spin out that much corn? The batter might run out before the corn does. I don't know of any timer on the market that would have a spin cycle long enough to put out 20-30 pounds of corn.

On-Time makes a very good timer. It has a life time warranty and I have gotten up to a year on 10 AA batteries when throwing twice a day. Spin time is adjustable up to about 10-12 seconds.

The original has the best battery life. The elite digital only has about 3-6 months of battery life.

Haha! I never noticed that 20-30# comment. In that case just let the spinner plate fall off...very little noise and 'mucho dispenso'!
Seriously you can get a good amount of corn on the ground with an 8 second spin and about a 1/4" gap from the spinner plate to the funnel mouth. If you're worried about hunters from the other property there are more stealthy ways to feed though. You could build a gravity feeder out of some big PVC pipe strapped to a tree. More filling but very hard to detect by others! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

The kenco tornado is a goodun, but irresistable to thieves. After mine was stolen I started making hanging bucket feeders that are "operated"by the deer, not coons and such. They work great in any weather, and if stolen I'm not out much.Any 5- 10 gal.bucket with a sealable lid will do fine. Yes you have to refill more often, but that's a sure way of knowing it works. The 5gal will hold approx.30#,and depending on how many deer and how often usually wiil go about two weeks before refilling. The real advantage is that they are very easy move and hang. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Well after alot of looking I learned most feeders are toys barely trowing 1-2 lbs of corn per max run time.I just poured corn around the tree the last 3 years and the wildlife ate 20-50lbs a day .Yes I said 20-50 lbs a day. That sounds like alot but it cost me about $350-$400 bulk rate for corn last year for about 90 days of feeding.I don't buy deer scents, fancy hunting clothing or $1000 deer rifles and I see on average 5-10 deer per hunt feeding at my corn sight and wheat field. That money spent spells real results in game sightings not flase promises like most hunting products people waste their time and money on.Plus the wildlife see some benfit from it as we only shot 2-4 deer a year and the rest eat for free. I had a few times last fall while bow hunting with over 20 deer in range inclueing a couple of bucks there at the same time. That has happened several times over the last few years and I am not in texas or on a 2000acre deer lease.Just the old 200 acre home place. Me and a friend have bagged at least 2 trophy class bucks a year the last few years on this set up much better than I did for years hunting there before lucky to see a buck every 4-7 days.We passed on mostlikey 20+ smaller bucks this fall. I did find a real feeder from Monarch in Texas.Their feeders throw 1 lb of corn per second with a 11 second max run 6 times a day. With the solar panel and deluxe batt it will feed several times a with its own power supply no chargeing need all season. 2 --11 second runs and I have 20+ lbs of corn on the ground. They have the old 350lb barrels and 500-700lb models. I am using the 500lb model as stated above It will go fast at 20+lbs per day. Looks like this feeder set up will work and I would tell everyone to give this stlye set up a try if legal in your area.Everyone has a heart attack when I tell them how much corn I put out but when the come and sit for a few hunts the are selling there $1000 rifle and buying a 30-30 and $400 in corn. You can't kill what you do not see and thats a fact! And yes it is still hunting even though small bucks may be easier taken this way the big old deer still wait to dark to come and are very alert and will patten your spot if you hunt it to much not comeing in tell after dark. They will always check down wind to before they approch to_Overall it does put alittle more odds in your favor which is what we all try to do even if it is putting a scope on your rifle vs iron sights so you can shot long range ,few drops of doe in heat next to your stand,or whatever else a guy can dream. Thanks for the help and good luck season will be here before you know it!!!

If you are seeing that many deer, I would guess that you could do just as well without the bait.

Planting food plots would be much better in the long run, since they will produce TONS of forage for deer for a much longer period.

I have cows on my place and only have a very limted area to grow food plots. Most of that area has bad,bad soil(rock).I still plant about 2-3 acres in food plots and the deer keep them grazed very well. They run back and forth from corn to food plot as they are about 100 yards apart.I do tapper them off the corn after season not just going cold turkey on them as they do become use to the easy meal and the deer ##'s drop and spread out real fast when feeding slows down.As for deer #'s I could kill a buck maybe 2 every fall but really hunted very hard and alot of days. The main diffence is now I see deer most everyday which is alot of fun to watch them even though I don't shoot 95+% of the time.also we take mature deer on a regular basis now which was never done here before. This is very easy to understand as now we have over 20+ does coming in to feed Vs maybe one small family group of 4-8 on the place in the old days.It is jsut a matter of time before a big boy shows up with that many does there thats a no brainer.A guy that hunts with me on this forum could tell you how well our set up is working if he drops by and reads the post.He hunted the year before feeding start and the last three yards we have done it. There was a major change that even a blind man could see.I guess if a guy had a super place to start with change may only be small. My land we hunt 90% of people would walk right over to somewhere else.We have no where else to hunt so must make it the best we can and we try to do that within limted money and time we have.Maybe someday I will have that 1000acre deer lease right in the middle of big buck country we all dream about and then I will not have to work as hard trying to pull those guys deer over to my place.

Yellowhammer, I forgot to ask what food plots you perfer for small acre's maybe 2-5 acres tops? I am going to try to clear alitte more space plant this season.I have been maily using wheat and oats as it grows on this bad soil here.I have had some Mossyoak Bio grow but thats about it.

Where are you? A lot has to do with rainfall and how often you get it. Here we get 45-60 inches of rain a year. For winter plots oats, wheat and ryegrass are cheap. But, if you want to to more the wildlife, plant winter peas, clovers, and vetches. But, they cost more and must be inoculated. It is also good to plant them in combination with the wheat, oats and rye.

Deer do like corn, but nutritionally, it is the least effective option out there.

If you have 20 does to every buck, you do not have a very "healthy" deer herd. But, good deer managment is a long story to get into here.

But, if you only have 200 acres, you are more impacted by your neighboors than anything you do.

We have several bucks to the doe's I often see two or 3 at a time with does feeding at the site.Mainy smaller bucks but bucks still.Plus you now no matter how many small bucks I pass the land owners around me I have no control over what they shot and my place is small.I know Corn does not offer alot of value to the deer one reason I have been trying a 50% whole soybean/ corn mix in my feeder right now to see how the deer eat it before using it this fall. They seem to like the mix and so do the wild turkeys as there was a flock there this morning when I was checking the cattle.I think I will be stuck with wheat and oats as rain is OK,but the soil is just real bad. That seems to be the good thing about wheat/oats is it seems to grow about anywhere I put it.Imperial has a new Extreme food plot blend I have been looking at that is said to grow in poor soil types I may give it a try.
