Deer responding to coyote calls ?

I am a Michigan guy so I do not know that much about Mule deer. I am of the opinion though they are not as sharp as Whitetails. I travel west to bird hunt but in the last couple yrs I have added coyote hunting to the to do list. I have called in 4 different Muley's that I believe responded to rabbit distress. I even shot a decent 4x4 Muley 2 wks ago that after being spotted and a caller turned on came to the call .... is it just me or does this happen to you too. tks Dennis

Last year I had 8 mule deer come running in to my call with adult cottontail distress... They come within 10 yards of the call and stood there for about 15 minutes... Thought it was pretty funny...

Happens all the time. The call sounds a lot like a fawn mule deer distress. They think they are coming to help a deer being harassed by coyotes or maybe caught in a fence.

I think you are wrong in your opinion though. It's like saying a coyote is not smart because he comes to a dying rabbit call. Just there nature. Mule deer are very smart and that is the reason why I don't have a collection of them hanging on my wall and have eaten tag soup the last few years.

Sorry to say that your wrong in your opinion. I should of said I disagree.

just last week i was on stand and a doe ended up coming to the call 5 minutes into the stand. She stood there for another 30 min until i got up and moved stands, couldnt believe she stayed that long.

I've had Whitetail does come to the fawn distress
Some have been really upset and looked like they would stomp anything but another deer to death.

Kinda fun to watch, while being scared to move at the same time.

Yep, I've had both Whitetail & Mule deer (male & female), come in to investigate.
Some were aggresive about it, others were quite passive.
I think it just depends on the particular deer.

It's not just mule deer, whitetails respond also. Heck, I once had two beard dragging tom turkey gobblers respond to a distress series in late January.

I've come close to getting myself and my Foxpro stomped by Whitetails several times now playing fawn and rabbit distress. I've called groundhogs out of their holes for a look in spring as well as calling two black bears within a month this spring. I even had a beagle follow me around one whole night looking for the screaming rabbit

. Animals are like people, yell fight and watch them gather around to see what's going on. This is especially true with cows. They can't resist me

I have called in 4 bears last spring along with a large numbers of doe with the fawn distress.
I have called in does with rabbit distress also but no bears. As been said, does come in and they are ready to kill all but that fawn.
I do not use the fawn disress as much any more to try and call yotes. I have a feeling that yotes have had their arses kicked by a pissed off mama and do not want any part of her or her offspring.
Also I do believe that bears are the no.1 fawn fatality reason just by the numbers I have called in with the fawn distress. I have called tom turkeys in with coyote pup distress. Animals are curious as also been said.

I call them in quite a bit, they will even come to a rabbit call. Couple weeks ago I was using fawn distress and called in 3 different goups of deer. They were grunting and acting pretty bizarre.

Called in a group of does once...walked 10 ft from caller. About 2 weeks ago had a nice 6 point come try to peak in on a nutty nuthatch call. 15 yds from me.
