Deer spotlight for night hunting?

I'm going to give night hunting a try the new couple weekends. I have a 3 million candlepower dual beam cordless spotlight that I use for deer. Could I just make a red cover and use this? I was going to buy a lightforce but if this light would work well I might as well use what I've already got. Thanks for any input.

I've never ran it dead at one time but I used it a couple nights this year tracking deer and it was on 2-3 hrs each time. I'm pretty sure they were seperate charges though. I didn't think too much about the battery lasting...good point Rick. Right now more concerned about how it will work for this purpose. Feel free to compare it up against one of the lightforce 170's. I don't want to try night hunting and give it up because I started with a crappy light.

Any light will work provided it throws enough of a beam far enough to Identify your target. Th most common problem night callers run into with cordles light is run time . Remember, most people are onlyon stand 15- 25 minutes and then off to another. Travel time usually doesnt count for long enough to charge in a vehicle. And you will be using your light nonstop while calling. Food for tough.

Around Christmas, I saw an LED spotlight at Walmart. Are these lights bright enough? If so, the battery should last a long time.

60x,

You can use the light as long as it last, I have one and use it along with a head lamp. I put tail light repair tape on to color it red, available at Walmart for a couple of bucks and it is removable. I havn't run into any trouble with the rig yet. Except for not having enough hands.

Elks,

We can spotlight deer in Michigan most times of the year but cannot have a gun with us while doing it. It is just done to locate bucks and view deer. Might be what 60x is refering to.

Where can you spotlight for deer????

REALLY, that was my first thought when I read 60X"s post. supprised nobody else caught that....JOHN

I forgot it's not allowed in alot of states. You just ride around and spotlight fields and see what is out. A great scouting tool to see what deer are in an area.

I it a small pleasure to watch them at night. Came home and watched 3 of them tonight for about 20 minutes. They just sit there in the pasture and look at you.

Ok,

Here we cant even think about pointing one at a large game. It is considered harassing wildlife to spot at night. Well learned something new today.

If you shine a spot light, on a county road in Florida, you better be looking for a address or changing a tire, and not have a gun in your truck/car or you will be Taking a 2 week Vacation in the county Jail.........

Deer spotting is just about as common as deer hunting here in Pa. Its nothing to see 3 or 4 cars out during the summer months, but you cant spot after 11pm, and shining livestock is considered harassment also no weapons in vehicle. butas far as 60x 3 mil candlepower, i would personally not use this light too much. You will get maybe 30 minutes continuous burn time i get 40 some on a 2 mil and a little under an hour on a mil. also it have seemed to me that even with a red cover the more powerful lights still seem to make critters skittish. My new favorite light setup has become a 4 hundered thousand candle power red light and a mil amber cordless for the shot. the small red light burns for a good while and wont spook game . They dont care for the amber light, but theyll usually stick around long enough for a shot. ps you can buy a 2 pack of lenses red and amber in cablelas for around 5 bucks. also another option is to pick up a 6 volt portable battery charger, only a few pounds, and they have a cigarette adapter , so you can plug in a corded spotlight like the 400,000 one. thats all i can tell ya man, hope it helps
