Designing an Effective Target Practice System – Ideas Needed

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to design a target practice system for both indoor and outdoor use. My goal is to make it adaptable for different skill levels, track accuracy, and provide real-time feedback.

I’m considering options like sensor-based scoring, moving targets, or even app integration to log performance.

I’m curious about what technologies or setups others have found effective, especially for improving precision and consistency.

Any recommendations on materials, mechanisms, or software that can enhance training would be greatly appreciated.

How would you approach building a reliable, engaging system?

If your talking about practicing to get better at hunting, my suggestions.

A lot of trigger time shooting in your field positions. I have a 22lr set up like my hunting rifles and practice off my stool and cross sticks, practice in whatever field positions you expect to use. I use brown paper targets with white dots (yard sale price dots). Set up multiple targets so you get used to moving your rifle and stick/bipod to different targets. I have a spot out in the desert that I have target boards scattered on a hillside.

If you’re looking to design a system for hunting, look at the Ace virtual shooting simulator. I use the system to practice USPSA skills. Most of what you’re looking for is in this app. While mostly designed for handguns, skills drills include moving targets, accuracy drills, timed drills etc. I believe they now have handsets that replicate AR 15 or AR9 functions.
It’s fun and extremely realistic. Various handsets are available that mimic the feel and weight of some popular handguns used in USPSA shooting. Lots of videos on YouTube.
