Despite a horrible Outfitter we landed 2 hogs...

I can't really explain how upset I was with our outfitter this last week while we were in TX hog hunting. My father and I booked this hunt 8 months or so ago with the outfitter. Prior to booking we asked some questions. One specific question was how many hunters will there be. He swore in the email that he rarely booked more than 2 parties at a time and never ran more than 4-5 guys at once. So when we booked, we thought ok maybe 2 or 3 other guys there. We were also told that we would have our own room and guide. Sounds pretty good. We were told that he had plenty of hogs, and we would have no problem getting a couple harvest opprotunities. He also said that we could hunt how and when we wanted and we could do just about anything. So here is how it really was: We arrived to find 6 other hunters already there and 2 more on the way. So we would be 2 hunters of 10 total on the ranch. That really ticked me off from the start. I then asked who was to be our guide, he said he had no other guides and that another hunter would take us to our tstand and pick us up. [beeep] off level increased. I then asked which room was ours. He said you will be sharing the room in the back. I was even more ticked. I told him this was not what he said, I showed him the email print outs I had that included the questions I asked and his replies. He said all he could do was offer to reschedule us!!!! We just drove 2 days and over 1500 miles and he wanted to see if we would leave and come back. We had no real choice so we stayed and decided to stick it out. The setup sucked. There were 10 grown men staying in a single wide trailer with 2 bed rooms. There was not enough room to even stand most of the time. So to the hunting. All the guys were hunting for rams and hogs. 4 days of hunting by 10 people netted 3 hogs and no rams. In total there were only 7 hogs seen. And every time a hog was seen, no one got to go back and hunt the stand. My dad and I even spent one entire night out and never saw a hog. We were expected to hunt exactly as the hunter who was driving, when he went out we went out, when he came in we came in. Even if I was wanting to stay out I couldn't. Even the shower was a joke. You had to be careful where you stood, cause"there is a hole and if you fall through I am not responsible." We did manage to get 2 of the 3 hogs taken. At first the outfitter refused to gut and skin em, another item that was "included". I then said "I saw you skin and gut the other guy's hog." He said he has been here before and we were here for our first time. Needless to say if you ever consider booking a hunt pm me and I will tell you who not to go with. It was horrible.

Here is a pic of our hogs.

Bummer. After traveling that far, the whole excitement builds for the hunt and then run into that situation? I would have been tempted to shoot more than hog. You did well to keep it together and not totally lose your cool. Did you ask for references?

I hate that for you elks. Next time you want to try some hog hunting, shoot me an e-mail or PM. A friend of mine runs a hog hunting guide service just north of here. He'll use his dogs, put you on hogs, let you kill 'em and then he'll process the hog for you. If you want to have the head mounted, he can do that as well. He's also a taxidermist.

The yellow coyote in my signature was mounted by him.

Once again, sorry about your bum deal.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience.

You definately handled it better than I could have.

Read me sig line, the last part.

The guy was Robert Kight from B-Hunting... Yes I did check references the three he gave. Just a bad deal all around. I got one hog and so did my dad. The situation just sucked, not the relaxing fun and enjoyable hunt I had hoped for. Come to find out he ebays most of his hunts. Wish I knew that before.

I feel bad for you. It's a tough call to know what to do in that case.

I'm pretty fussy about accomodations, etc because I take my wife with me on nearly all my non-predator hunts. That situation wouldn't have gone over very well if that had been she and I on that hunt!

How did the other guys in camp feel?

I'm fortunate that I have a friend who invites me to hunt hogs on his ranch. Hog hunting is one of the most enjoyable hunts I've ever had.

Maybe Glenn Guess would be willing to guide you on a future hunt? He sure seems to get into a lot of pigs.

If yer inta hogs only and bowhunt only thats all this ranch allows. I can tell you a great ranch just out of Vanderpool texas (Bugscuffle and Brian is an awesome guy) and even tell ya how to hunt it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif ... sorry you had a bad experience that just sucks ..

was all your money paid in advance,or did you pay a deposit and the rest of the money owed on arrival?,just to damned bad you were so far away and was damn near obligated to go through with the hunt,,,how did you hear about this guy in the first place,,through an internet search?and was the other hog killed by the "hunter" in charge of driving you around?
i know i will black list him if i ever go on a hog hunt but no matter how many people you tell there are always going to be people that don't know any better and book a hunt with him,,to bad EVERYONE doesn't come to this site to read the warning about this outfitter,,and i use the term loosely

elks,
Man, that really stinks it up! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif Did you guys have to cook for yourselves too?
Make sure you make a complaint with the Game and Fish Dept, and with the consumer division of the attorney generals office. That way it'll be on record so someone else dont get scamed. You should be able to get your money back including your gas money for breach of contract.
Dont just take it in behind! That might be one of the reason this guy is still operating,no one has complained about him! Atleast not on paper! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Does this guy carry a professional license of some sort for his "guide" service? If he does, at the very least you should send an official complaint to the licensing agency. If you purchased this hunt off from E-bay, lay honest and accurate feed back on on him. E-bay feedback is some powerful stuff.

To bad Elks, I'd hammer him on ebay like Michael says. I'd of been telling him a bunch before I left.. Glad you told us his name though, that type of crap everyone needs to know... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Sorry about your hunt. Not all Texas guides are like that so don't give up on the great hunting here because of one guy. I know a guy that does hunts around Abilene if you are ever down this way. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif I agree with clayman90, I don't think I would have handled that situation very well. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

just read the post and you don't say if the "outfitter/guide" had a woodshed? yep, belive i'd have invited him out for an armload of kinling... we'd had a "talk". that really sucks.

reminds me of a time fresh outta school, best friend and i paid a deposit for a hog, goat hunt in TN. should have known better, it was a canned hunt, the animals were penned. the ole boy "guide" paraded us round and round the pen trying to get us lost-didn't work. hell, i wanted to hunt. at the time it was $200 or 300 every time you pulled the trigger. Crooked Creek Lodge was the name of the place, i told the head ramrod/dick that i wasn't going to pay to kill a penned animal. the guy apologized and said most of his clients were old, stoved-up or city people. said i was the first person who left without firing a shot. not sure if they are still in operation or not? we loaded-up and drove home. hogs are 30 cents a pound at the stockyard.

Update.... I did not book the hunt through Ebay, if I had, man I woud have a lot to say. I found out about his ebay business from the other hunters there, as they booked through ebay. The other 2 groups that were there when we were, had hunted once before with him (one was not coming back after this trip). They might have changed their mind when he let one of em shoot a ram inside the fence without a trophy fee. It was the only way that they left somewhat satisfied with the hunt. The other 2 had decided that this would probable be their last trip to this guide as it "had went down hill bad since 2 years ago when they were there." I gues they had different expectations than I did. The other hunters had already used him once.

I have checked and can not find where or if he is licsenced. The guy is kind of a backwoods sleeze bag. He had no concept of caring for his customers and no hospitality. Heck while I was there I even had a birthday that he knew about, the only thing that resulted ofthat was a happy b-day from my dad. I wasn't expecting much but the guy never really even acknowledge we exsisted once he pawned us off on the other hunter.

I am still looking at how this might get out to benefit other hunters.

I also know not all guides are like this. 3 years ago my father and I went to a ranch just out side of Del Rio. On that ranch I saw more hogs the first 5 minutes than our group of 10 saw in three days. The big problem was we were told what we wanted to hear and not what was actually going to happen.

Nice job on the hogs, sorry to hear about the outfitter though. You got a nice looking cat there too. That is something that I want bad!!! For what it is worth, Happy Birthday.

Elks, Sorry you had a bad TX experiance. You and your dad are welcome at my place any time. I will show you true TX hospitality. Give TX another try. If you want you cam PM me and I can give you the name of a few guys in South TX that are top notch or I will Take you myself.
