Diaphragm vs Open Reed Howler for noob?

Hey all, I have only one private property to hunt but it does have pressure from other hunters, so as a result I’m looking to learn how to howl with hand calls. I have no experience howling, and don’t know if open reed or diaphragm is the way to go. I’ve never used either, however having a diaphragm inside my mouth does seem rather unappealing to me. I’ve been checking out the primos Hot Dog and the MFK howler diaphragm pack, but looking for more suggestions as well as to what I ought to start out with.

EDIT: The Elk inc power howler also looks interesting and easy to use as well

I honestly feel like a power howler is a great way to go for someone starting out. You might not ever want to use anything else once you get good with it. I also think the learning curve is shorter with one vs anything else, all things being equal. Also, if you ever want to step up to a custom version of one, there’s a couple guys on here that do that.

All of them work. In my opinion I would go with a diaphragm howler. You can put a couple of them in your pocket and you’re good to go. I also think they offer the most realistic sound.Takes some time to master it but once you do they are great tools.

I do like the power howler style too. The one I have is made with a cow horn made by Rich Higgins a number of years ago. Sounds very realistic.

And I’ve used a number of open reed howlers that have worked well too.

Bottom line pick one and become proficient with it and you’ll call coyotes.

Good Hunting Chad

I've tried both diaphragm howlers and open reed howlers. The open reed howlers have a shorter learning curve, for sure, even though they do take up more room in your pack or your pocket. I especially like cowhorn howlers.
